Putting a price on life... something we should never have to do. I am going to write this in first person because it is deeply personal to me. The reality of my dear friend Gwen and those near and dear to her changed recently when she found out her Leukemia is back for a third time.

I first met Gwen at the end of my first chemo in 2012. We became fast friends. Over the last three years she has become one of the most important people in my life.  We have supported each other through many ups and downs during our struggles and victories with Leukemia.

Gwen was first diagnosed with Leukemia in January of 2012, while living in London. She was rushed back to Canada where she began immediate treatment. She received a stem cell transplant in May 2012, from a 10/10 unrelated donor.  After some major struggles it seemed as though the transplant was successful. Gwen once again began living her life, working lots of hours and doing all the things.

At the end of 2013 Gwen relapsed again. More radiation and treatment. She powered through it like the champion she is. Then more living life like the lover of life that she is. After some travel, Gwen was working up to 12 - 16 hour days in the film industry, and feeling great, when she got more devastating news. The Leukemia is back, and this time the prognosis is not as good. After getting an unhopeful assessment from her main Leukemia doc, who basically told her there is nothing more they could do for her, Gwen went to see a specialist in Seattle, who turned out to be perhaps far more knowledgeable, and definitely more optimistic.

Now under the care of new doctors, Gwen has been told that she does have a shot at life. She needs to get through this heavy dose of chemo she is currently on and then they can look at giving her a second stem cell transplant from another donor. Nothing is for sure. Things are going to be a battle for Gwen and her family in so many ways in these months to come. I hope that at least financially we can help them out a bit.

Already they have the added costs of renting a condo in Vancouver for her to heal and for her family to be able come over from the Island and take care of her.  Now she has found out that they don't do second stem cell transplants in BC. She will either have to go to Ontario or Seattle to fight for her life. The costs of either will be daunting, but if her best chance of surviving means going to Seattle how can you put a price on life? But it is a crazy amount!

Every little bit helps. If you can, please help this exceptional woman. She has done so much for me through my illness. My last years have been better because she is in them, offering humor, wig dates, food, massages, and so many words of wisdom that could come only from a being who has truly lived, loved, struggled, survived and seen some things! I really don't think Gwen would ask for help. So I am asking. It is so important. This world still needs Gwen! She has a lot of living left to do. And after all this fighting she deserves it. This really is a matter of life and death for one of the most real people I have ever met. Gwen is my best cancer friend and she deserves her best shot at life!
