Nepal Earthquake Relief - Supplies

Today a magnitude 7.9 earthquake struck Nepal. Many villages are destroyed and many people are hurt and now without food, shelter, or supplies.
One of those districts affected is Nuwakot, about 1 hour from Kathmandu (the capital of Nepal). Already 200 people have died in the district alone.
This page was inspired by our friend, Basu Panday, who is from Nuwakot. In his home village, 90% of the houses have been destroyed and 6 people have died so far from the earthquake.
He is headed to the village to bring much needed supplies there as well as to the surrounding villages in the district. Please support him in this effort.
All the funds raised here will be given to Basu to purchase supplies and aid in the rescue and recovery.

A Note from John Vourlis about Basu and what we plan on doing with the funds:
I have known Basu Panday for 5 years. I first met him on a trip to Nepal I took in 2010 with 20 yoga students and teachers from the Cleveland, Ohio area. Basu was our Nepali guide on that adventure. I wrote a book about that trip, called Yoga For Freedom, which documents the adventure and Mr. Panday’s part in it. The goal of the trip was to visit the Nepal Orphans Home in Kathmandu and help raise awareness about the child slavery problem in Nepal that has affected many of the children at NOH and throughout the country. This is an issue which Mr. Panday has been committed to changing in Nepal for many years now. Basu has also been a friend to Nepal Orphans Home in Kathmandu for many years.
Basu’s company, Nepal Social Treks & Expedition has organized many, many trips throughout Nepal for people from dozens of countries. He’s taken people all around Nepal, including to Mt. Everest, where he himself has made it up to 21,000 feet, and been responsible for many people’s safety. He and his company are well known and well respected in the Nepali travel business community.
Recently I wrote a letter to the United States Embassy in Nepal to help Basu secure a work/travel visa to the United States, so he could promote travel to Nepal. Mr. Panday and Nepal Social Treks were such a big part of putting the Yoga For Freedom trip that led to the book together, and a major part of the story, and I wanted to invite him to come to the U.S. and participate in our marketing campaign. While in the US, Mr. Panday participated in the Adventure and Travel Show held in Los Angeles Feb 21 and 22, 2015 and after the shows he also participated in the marketing campaign for my book.
I consider Basu a friend, and I trust him completely, as I’m sure everyone who knows him does. Basu is a good, honest, hardworking man and very proud of his country. When he contacted Minling Chuang, who also went on the Yoga For Freedom trip, and me after the recent devastating earthquake that hit Nepal, we were relieved to hear that he and all his fellow guides at Nepal Social Treks were safe, but terribly saddened to hear of the destruction wrought by the quake on his home village of Nuwakot. Basu was there for us on our Yoga For Freedom trip, and now we want to help pay back his kindness to us, so we helped him set up this relief fund as quickly as we could.
We’ve posted the pictures Basu was able to get from family and friends in the region. The damage is extensive and quite visible. Basu is trying to get to Nuwakot himself, but the roads are impassable, and he was forced to turn back today. He will continue to work to get to Nuwakot, and he will continue to keep us updated on the status of his village.
The funds we are helping raise here will go directly to Basu and he will be using them to buy things like tents for shelter and food and water, all of which are in desperate need in Nepal. He will also be distributing money to the villagers to help them rebuild their homes. He has pledged to document everything, with photographs, including all the supplies he purchases and the homes he helps villagers to rebuild. Those of us who know Basu trust him completely in this endeavor. Basu is deeply committed to his country, his hometown, and his family and friends. We are confident he will make the best use of these funds possible. We only wish we could be there to help him personally. This fund is the next best thing.
