Surgery for Barnaby

Donation protected

*UPDATE 4/26/14* Barnaby needs surgery! We took him back to the vet today and found out he has a problem in his molar, which is extremely painful for him and is causing him to ignore his food. This procedure costs $1500, and we need your help! Barnaby has lost 100 grams in the short span of two months. We need to have this surgery done ASAP. The specialist we will be seeing unfortunately does not do payment plans like our regular vet does, so we will have to pay the $1500 in full on the day of the surgery. Barnaby will continue to not eat until he has this surgery. In the meantime, we will need to syringe feed him his food and hay daily, but this cannot go on for too long. Please help by sharing this page or donating. Barnaby needs your help! He is only a little over a year old, and the average lifespan is 10-15 years with the oldest chinchilla on record being 28 years old! It would absolutely devastate us if we have to put our little baby down. We thank you all so much for your support.

Hi everyone! Our names are Erin and Greg, the proud parents of a 1 1/2 year old chinchilla named Barnaby. Even though we have only owned Barnaby for a short period of time, he has brightened our lives more than we ever expected. As of recent, Barnaby has been experiencing health problems. We have already spent over $500 in vet bills which consisted of feces analysis, antibiotics, topical anti-bacterial soap, anesthesia, and an oral procedure. The problem began with drooling from his mouth which slowly went down his chin to his underbelly. If you know anything about chinchillas, you know that their fur cannot get wet! Shortly after that he began chewing his paws, causing an infection, which led us to our first vet visit. We treated that, but he still continued to drool and chew. We took him back to the vet and found out he had an overgrown molar, and we had a procedure done for that. Unfortunately, even after all of this treatment, he is still not well. Barnaby is still drooling, is severely underweight, and is not eating enough. We need to have blood tests, an x-ray of his mouth, and more anesthesia done to find out what is causing this. In the beginning we were able to afford the vet bills, but they are getting more and more costly and we are starting to fall behind. We fear that soon we will not be able to afford the treatment that is needed to bring our baby back to the healthy, happy chin he once was. Any donation is extremely appreciated and we cannot thank you enough. We love him so dearly and do our very best to give him everything we can.

We take VERY good care of our chin. His cage is 5 feet high, full of places to jump and houses/huts to hide in. He is supplied with filtered water, fresh hay, and food daily. His cage is cleared of his droppings DAILY, and a full cage cleaning (washing the fleece, changing the wee-wee pads underneath the fleece, cleaning the water bottle, etc.) is done once a week. He is supplied with many sticks, wood chews, and lava stones to chew on. He is taken out for playtime every day, for 2-3 hours per day.
