Students Bike Across America

Project Discovery is a grant funded Educational Talent Search Program that helps many low-income, first generation students go to college. In addition to  college and career exploration, and financial literacy programs during the school year, we offer enrichment programs during the summer.

This summer, 10 students from 5 counties (Cherokee, Swain, Graham, Madison, and Buncombe) will embark on a big adventure, cycling self-supported across the United States!

On June 18th, we will begin part one of a two-part adventure across the country. We will start in Yorktown, VA and in 22 days and roughly 800 miles arrive in St. Louis, MO!

Students will experience the "Heart of America,"
-Seeing the beauty of our country and it's people. Our experience begins where the country did, Yorktown VA. An area steeped in history.
-Cycling the famed Trans America Trail, made popular by intrepid cyclists every year since 1976
-Visiting both Virginia Tech and Beara College
-Visiting "The Gateway to the West," the Arch at St. Louis
-and more!

Throughout the trip, students will learn leadership through the Group Dynamics Teaching Model.  They will experience being the "Leader of the Day" by: cultivating their own real leadership style, practicing conflict resolution skills, being a better communicator, and practicing Situational Leadership Theory.

This is a massive undertaking and we need your help!

Each student is responsible for raising $600 to help pay for the trip. This is only $28 dollars a day!  $600 per student covers the "bare bones" of our costs:  food (we cook our own meals), bus, gas, campsites, daily needs.  Any additional money we fundraise could cover things like admissioin to Colonial Williamsburg, a Saint Louis Cardinals baseball game, eating out one night, or getting to stay in a hotel one night.

For these students, many have never seen the ocean, cycled a long distance, never camped, never been outside of North Carolina or, certainly, West of the Mississippi.

We hope that through this experience students will be stronger- gaining in resilience, leadership, and self-efficacy- and ultimately, thrive in college!

We would really appreciate any amount that you could donate to help support us this summer!
