The Opportunity
Shenzhen is considered a migrant city because of the influx of young people from all over China. They desire and experience intense pressure to succeed, establish a family, and be able to support their parents. Like many of us, they are searching for their identity and purpose in life. Therefore, they are looking for a community that will encourage and support them in their endeavors. Star-Fish seeks to be their temporary “home away from home,” where they can discover encouragement, personal development, cultural diversity, and a warm, friendly environment.
Location
Star-Fish will be located in Shenzhen, China; where every minority group is represented; the median age is thirty-one, and the city’s population is over fifteen (15) million people. A young population in a youthful city that is eager to explore its cultural diversity while developing into a world-class city.
In addition, Shenzhen is an international city boasting with 300,000 plus expats and thousand of business leaders visiting each day. Boa’an District is the largest district in Shenzhen with ties to Hong Kong through a new economic development zone and the largest shopping mall in Shenzhen. Finally, Shenzhen is considered one of the fastest growing cities in the world. [“Shenzhen: Most Crowded in China” Shenzhen Press Group. 2012]
Star-Fish will feature…
The Bridge is an intercultural, “event focused” activity club; where diversity and uniqueness of cultures is celebrated through the arts and personal development. The club, located in the coffee house, bridges cultures by weaving high-quality presentations, personal interaction, and practical application in order to challenge the members to develop their critical thinking and cultural awareness. The promotion of the sense of commonality of cultures and appreciation of differences, while providing a safe community where meaningful relationships can develop faster. Examples: Open Mic - personal expression in music, poetry, and art; seminars on resume’ formation, conflict communication, and music appreciation; International business practices; English Corner; etc.
ROCC Coffee Discovery Bar, where the customer is invited to observe and participate in the art of making a fantastic coffee or beverage. The "bar" is a 100% flat open-bar where we will prepare our coffees–inspiring curiosity and learning. This “bar” will work as a centerpiece for the shop, as well as setting an attitude of performance and showmanship. Like a joyous family gathering in the kitchen, this will become a meeting point for customers and a way to encourage community. The sights, sounds, aromas, and words will communicate: “We care! Visitors are welcome here!”
Full Service Coffee House & Roaster. Star-Fish will be a premier neighborhood coffee house devoted to joy, fun, and fellowship. By creating a unique and inviting experience, we will introduce the coffee culture to the Chinese people and provide a warm ambiance that encourages friendship to be built. In addition, a small on-site roaster will provide will provide fresh “Origins” coffee beans and unique aromas.
Outcomes
• Awareness of the benefit of cross-cultural relationships and mutual appreciation of cultures.
• Understand the value of “The Arts” in culture and leadership.
• Increase in one’s individual life skills in order to realize one’s personal goals.
• Appreciation of the skill, flavor, and presentation of coffee and its culture.
• Recognition of excellence in service, quality of beverages/food, and clean, friendly surroundings.
• Acknowledgment of the active, superior setting for local and professional organizations to conduct a small conference or seminar. Example: Toastmasters, Lions Club, Rotary Club, local church, or business outings.
• Frequent expat customers invited to engage in the activities and appreciate the Chinese culture.
Gifts
Our goal is to raise 3,200 sponsors at $25 or more per gift for a target of $50,000.
Become a part of our “International Friends” exhibit which will showcase the interest, care, and compassion from their friends around the world. The presentation will include an interactive world map with your picture, city, first name, and personalize, encouraging words (if you choose that option).
Your gift will assist in the following but not limited to:
• Two years of leased space (150 square meters) for the inter-cultural club site
• Audio/visual equipment
• Furniture and lighting for the site
• Partial utility expenses shared with the coffee house
• Salary for inter-cultural club coordinator
