Misha Sweet's Olympic Fencing Dream

Donation protected
HI, I'm Misha Sweet, an aspiring Olympian currently residing in Winnipeg, Manitoba. My ultimate goal is to be able to represent Canada on the Men's Foil Fencing team at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.

I'm on the left next to my coach Ayach Bounachada and my two other Winnipeg teammates Sarah Filby and Cameron Mackay

In fencing, equipment, training, and traveling all over the world doesn't come cheap. At the moment, my only sources of funding are my wonderful and supportive parents and only about $1000 - $2000 per year from both Sport Manitoba and The Manitoba Fencing Assiciation (which really only pays for one of the seven or more trips I do in a season). So, to help relieve some of the financial stress I have been putting on my parents, any support you are willing to offer is greatly appreciated.

ABOUT ME

I was born October 19th, 1996 in Chichester, West Sussex, England. About six weeks later, my family moved to Winnipeg, MB, Canada. Raised in Linden Woods in Winnipeg, I attended École Van Walleghem School in the French immersion program until grade 8 when I continued on to École Secondaire Oak Park High School where I graduated in June of 2014 with honours despite missing many classes for training, as well as travelling for competitions. I started my fencing career as a sabre fencer at the age of 8 in 2004 at the Rapier Fencing Club after my mom suggested I go check out the Manitoba Fencing Association open house at the old Winnipeg Technical College building on Pembina Ave.. After being a member of the club for one year, the club moved location to St. Boniface and my father at the time was not too keen on making the commute. I didn't touch another sword until the summer of 2006 when i participated in a Mini U camp that included foil fencing. I was 100% hooked from then on. I joined the Cavalier Fencing Club as a foil fencer the following September and I am still a member and now coach eight years later. I have been a member of the provincial team, Manitoba Golden Blades, for the past seven years and was a member of Team Manitoba at the 2013 Sherbrooke Canada Summer Games.
In the Junior category I am currently ranked 1st in Manitoba, 3rd in Canada and 75th in the World.

Here I am at a local competition in Winnipeg early in my career scoring a point on one of our more experienced fencers.

Some of my top Canadian results include a silver medal at in the Cadet category at the Canada Cup in Kinston, ON in 2013 and more recently a gold medal in the Senior category at the Canada Cup in Montréal, QC in November of 2014.

I have competed all across Canada and the United States. The past three years of my career I have also been a member of the Canadian National team competing in various international events including:

World Cups:
2016 Junior World Cup, Aix-en-Provence, France
2015Junior World Cup, Leszno, Poland
2015 Junior World Cup, London, England
2015 Senior Satelite, London, England
2015 Senior World Cup, Paris, France
2015 Senior Grand Prix, Havana, Cuba
2014 Junior World Cup, Mödling, Austria

Cadet/Junior Pan American Championships:
2016 Cancun, Mexico
2015 Toronto, Canada
2013 Ponce, Puerto Rico

Cadet/Junior World Championships:
2016 Bourges, France
2015 Tashkent, Uzbekistan

At this stage in my development, I feel like I've gotten the most I can out of training with my very limited number of training partners (who don't compete at anything higher than a National level) despite training sometimes upwards of 6 times per week, having at least 3 private lessons with my World Class coach, Ayach Bounachada, per week and 2-3 individual strength training session per week as well. Therefore, if I am to comtinue improving, that will mean traveling more for training and tournament experience in places such as The United States and Europe where they have much stronger fencing than I can find here at home.

All proceeds will help me achieve my Olympic dream by helping offset the cost of travel to my many national and international events for both competition and training.

On behalf of my parents, Elizabeth and Graham, my sister and best friend Kira, and of course, myself, we would like to thank you for your time and support!!!
