Soaring To New Heights- Jade T.

Hello Everyone,

My name is Jade Thompson and I am delighted to announce my acceptance to Barnard College Columbia University Class of 2021! Hopefully, I will soon be transitioning from the small town of Mount Vernon, NY to the “Big Apple City” that never sleeps!

I come from a family that values education, believes in hard work, and possesses abiding faith that we can do all things through Christ. In November, I applied to Barnard Early Decision and was ecstatic when I received the acceptance letter in the mail. My entire family was overwhelmed by my induction into Ivy League. However, the financial package reflected a tuition of over $71,000 and although I received a scholarship of $40,000 there remains a balance of $30,000 per year. This looms as a financial burden.

My mother is the single parent of three girls. My parents divorced when I was four years old and although we have encountered numerous adversities, we have triumphed over circumstance time and again. A year ago, my mom suffered a heart attack. She fought back. A few months later, my little sister was diagnosed with scoliosis and we continued to fight. In April, I lost my aunt to cancer and in August I lost my uncle to kidney failure. Although life has not been a bed of roses and we lost family members, we refuse to lose hope. We will not lose hope in the possibilities of tomorrow and we will not lose hope in the human spirit of generosity!

Today, I need your help in making my aspiration a reality, and I will tell you just why I am a good cause:

-          With dedication and consistent effort, I have maintained above a 4.0 GPA and Principal’s Honor Roll throughout high school.

-          My rigorous academic schedule includes all 5 AP courses, while I actively engage in clubs and various afterschool and weekend activities.

-          I’ve been awarded Scholar Athlete and Most Improved as a flyer on the Mount Vernon Knights Cheerleading Team.

-          I am president of the youth group at my church where I contribute to the Angel Tree program that supplies Christmas presents to children of incarcerated parents.

-          I am the founder and manager of my very own business, “Chelsea and Jade’s Lemonade,” and the proceeds of this five year summer job are donated to "adopt a bill" at my church.

-          I was featured on the front page of the Mount Vernon Inquirer as a positive example of youthful entrepreneurship. (See Below)

-          I organized a community cleanup program in my neighborhood and I am president of an Environmental Awareness Club at my school.

-          I am a proud member of the National Honor Society, Language Honor Society, The National Academy of Future Scientists and Technologists, The Northeast STEM starter Academy, and Math Team.

-          I have been awarded The National Academy of Future Leaders of Science and Technology Leadership Ambassador and Award of Excellence.

-          I am scheduled to be interviewed by the Education Superintendent on January 11th to discuss academic success.

-          I have been selected to participate in Barnard’s Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program.

I would really appreciate your help in bridging the tuition gap. In addition, there are other outstanding expenses such as the need for textbooks, a laptop, notepads, etc. Any donation would ensure that I am able to concentrate more on academics and worry less about costs.

Please support this worthwhile cause in making my dreams come true. I want to attend Barnard College to double-major in Computer Science and Architecture. Following this, I will pursue a Master’s degree in Environmental Engineering. I have always had an interest in energy conservation and waste reduction. I believe, using my experience in Computer Science, I will be able to invent applications and technology that take global warming seriously. Combined with my knowledge of architecture, I will be able to design optimal energy efficient homes and buildings. I guarantee I will not disappoint you. I am hardworking and committed not only to academics but to the human condition as a whole. Each donation will mean so much to me.

This is an opportunity for you to invest in a positive endeavor. During a period when youth are falling victim to numerous distractions and stereotypes, I stand against the odds as an example of possibility. I want to prove to other minorities that hard work yields great reward. However, great reward also comes from great effort by both the individual and community. It takes a village and today, I need you more than ever. Help me DREAM BIG and SOAR HIGH, so I can prove to others that they can do the same!
