This past June, one of my twin girls was diagnosed with leukemia. After about a week of walking around the hospital like a zombie, I went home and got my guitar. Some of the brightest moments of the next hospital-bound month, both for me and my daughter, were spent singing and writing songs. I can speak from experience that music truly can heal.
Now I want to offer what Clio and I discovered in that hospital room to other kids struggling through similar things. Though it will include several cancer-specific songs, this won't be a "cancer" album. It'll be a "life" album: a collection of songs about appreciating the little things, coping with hardship, and embracing the struggle. The working title is "Singing Our Way Through: Songs for the World's Bravest Kids."
I'm very excited to head into the studio this January with some of my very favorite musicians (including Chris Smither, Rani Arbo, and 2013 Grammy nominees, Aoife O'Donovan, Elizabeth Mitchell and The Okee Dokee Brothers) as well as a large cadre of kid singers and a patient-and-siblings chorus.
My intention is to make this album a free resource for patients and pediatric oncology programs around the country. Therapists and child life specialists will be able to add this CD to their arsenal of tools aimed at helping kids cope with cancer. I don't believe there's another album like this available anywhere.
Every donation to this page will help me cover not only the costs of production (around $15,000, including manufacturing) but also the costs required to get the music into the hands of kids in hospitals around the country. We won't officially release the album until September 2013 (in conjunction with National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month) but I plan to have everything finished by late spring. You should get your advanced copies and other rewards by May, 2013 (show tickets are available immediately).
So. That's the story. Before I let you go, I'd like to share one of the songs that we plan to record for the album. Clio and I co-wrote it in the hospital this summer and recorded this little demo on my computer:

These are awesomely creative and talented people blessed with twin joy but sadly one of their little princesses is seriously ill. Check out his kids music, and her writing. I have enjoyed following their journey, reading her words and all of us love his music...check them out :-)
