URGENT APPEAL FOR FUNDS FOR SHIPMENT OF LIFE-SAVING MEDICAL EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES TO SIERRA LEONE

Concerned Sierra Leoneans in the UK set up the Sierra Leone UK Diaspora Ebola Response Taskforce to help end the Ebola outbreak in Sierra Leone.

Among other tasks, the Taskforce works closely with the Sierra Leone High Commissioner in the UK, H.E. Edward Turay, and with officials at the Ministry of Health & Sanitation and the newly formed National Ebola Response Centre (NERC) in Sierra Leone to get URGENTLY NEEDED MEDICAL EQUIPMENT & MEDICINES based on a priority list of items from the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, sent to Sierra Leone.

Gloves, alcohol gels and medical gowns waiting to be shipped.

The Sierra Leone UK Diaspora Ebola Response Taskforce has received in-kind donations of medical equipment from Phoenix Resource Centre (http://www.phoenix-resource-centre.org.uk/, Charity No 1133503), a UK-based environmental charity. Donations include ready-to-use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and other essential medical equipment filling at least ten 40-foot containers. A medical doctor who is a member of the Taskforce has personally inspected the quality of a sample of the equipment. Only equipment fit for purpose and that comply with the medical donations guideline of Sierra Leone and WHO will be shipped. Should, after further verification, some of the equipment not be of the required standard, the Taskforce will utilise some of the funds raised towards purchasing the equipment directly from certified suppliers. The Government of Sierra Leone will waive all excise duty costs. However, shipping, offloading and coordination of ten 40-foot containers will cost a total of £48,600.

To date, 129 healthcare workers have been infected in Sierra Leone, and 95 have died. Frontline healthcare workers caring for Ebola positive patients need a constant supply of protective equipment. They get through the equipment rapidly because of the high number of infections and the importance of adhering to strict infection prevention and control protocols. Ebola patients desperately need medicine to ease their pain and suffering.

THE TASKFORCE AND THE PEOPLE OF SIERRA LEONE NEED YOUR HELP TO GET THESE ESSENTIAL MEDICAL SUPPLIES AND EQUIPMENT SENT TO SIERRA LEONE.

·         THE FIRST CONTAINER LOADING IS DUE ON                8th NOVEMBER

·         THE FIRST SHIPMENT OF SUPPLIES TO LEAVE              THE UK ON 16th NOVEMBER

·         THE TASKFORCE AIMS TO RAISE £25,000 IN 3              WEEKS

The Taskforce has already received substantial pledges towards shipping costs. The Taskforce aims to load up to five (5) 40-foot containers worth of equipment and supplies on 8th November. Given the urgency of the need, the Taskforce is aiming to raise the remainder of the funds within the next 3 weeks. No donation is too small - every penny counts.

What happens to the money donated?
Donations will be channelled through a dedicated bank account set up by SLWT, a Sierra Leonean diaspora-led charity with a proven track record (established in the UK in 1999 (Charity Number: 1085628; http://www.slwt.org/). This account has been set up specifically for the purpose of getting these essential medical supplies to Sierra Leone.

What happens if we raise more than the target amount?
I
f we exceed our initial target, we shall work with the Phoenix Resource Centre and other providers to send more supplies to the Ebola frontline.

Ebola has touched all parts of the county, so the Taskforce is liaising with partners on the ground to ensure distribution across the country to the areas of greatest need.

We are working with media to ensure full coverage of the process, and respected non-governmental actors who can guide and monitor the process. We shall provide regular updates on this funding page.

About the Taskforce
The Sierra Leone UK Diaspora Ebola Response Taskforce was set up to harness UK Sierra Leonean Diaspora skills and resources and networks in response to the Ebola crisis. To this end, the Taskforce serves as an interface between the main stakeholders addressing the Ebola crisis and the UK Sierra Leonean Diaspora. It helps to coordinate efforts undertaken by Sierra Leonean Diaspora organizations and individuals. It undertakes specific assignments that are better done by the Taskforce than by individual organisations, such as mobilization of diaspora healthcare and other professionals to assist with the Ebola response, and harnessing of resources to shift a significant volume of essential medical supplies to Sierra Leone.
