This Valentine's Day - Give the Gift of Education

Tax deductible
This Valentine's Day - want to give the gift of education to your loved one?!

Then join Open Dreams and make this Valentine's Day very special by supporting the dreams of one of our amazing scholars in Cameroon or South Africa!

This Valentine's Day, we are raising money for Open Dreams by sending hand-designed Valentine's Day Cards, poems, and chocolates to your special someone to help  our non-profit empower lives through education. Your contribution will help our amazing scholars in Open Dreams apply for international scholarships at leading universities all over the world.  Just a small donation can help us pay for and transport students to SAT and TOEFL testing, assist with college application fees, allow us to run our 2-month Summer Academy, and even support students with small financial scholarships to help them get to the school of their dreams. In return, we will send either hand-made Valentines Card by our scholar Theodore Kanjo at the University of Botswana, a heart felt poem written by Shamina Bongi who hopes to finish her last year at the University of South Africa in Social Work, or an Open Dreams chocolate and bags (or all the above!) to your loved one!

Many of our students celebrating the end of the Summer Academy in front of our center in Bamenda, Cameroon. We are very happy to say that many of these wonderful faces are now studying at McGill University, Edinburgh University, University of Botswana, African Leadership Academy in South Africa, African Leadership University in Mauritius and more!

At Open Dreams, we aim to bridge the global gap between talent and opportunity for high-achieving, low-income scholars around the world. Working primarily with students in Cameroon and South Africa, we are a college-access organization, using tech-enabled platforms such as Skype, Hangouts, Whatsapp, Facebook and Email to foster mentorship between motivated high school students and volunteers, many of whom are located in US, Canada, Europe, and beyond. We have helped over 100 students matriculate into universities, with over 30 scholars winning Full-Tuition scholarships at leading universities in Canada like McGill, University of British Columbia, University of Toronto, in the UK at the  University of Edinburgh, and in some of the best universities in Africa including the University of Cape Town (#1 in Africa!), KNUST, Ashesi, University of Botswana and more. We are thrilled to have students studying engineering, computers, nursing, science, business, and medicine in amazing locations like Mauritius, Rwanda, Ghana, Canada, the UK, South Africa, Botswana, and more. We are proud to say,  they all dream of returning back to their hometown and giving back to others like themselves!
One of our students, Che Maeva, is even the top Engineering student in her class at McGill University. Another four of our scholars mastered the Russian language and are now excelling at Engineering the People's University in Russia! Find out more about our incredible scholars here: Opening Dreams Across the World in 2018

We celebrate Melusi Hlatshwayo, our first scholar to graduate as a Social Auxiliary Worker in Soweto, South Africa. He plans to work with young men in his hometown of Soweto to give them the confidence and support they need to follow their dreams. Help support his peer, Bongi to finish her last year at the University of South Africa.

Hear how our scholar, Bryan Anye made it to University of British Columbia on a full MasterCard Scholarship!

We started Open Dreams based on my story. My name is Blaise Buma, and I was a very smart and dedicated young man growing up just outside of Bamenda, Cameroon to a lovely family who valued education. I knew I wanted to study in the U.S. and I luckily met an amazing American volunteering in Cameroon who helped me apply to universities in the U.S. The first year I got three partial scholarships to leading schools, but it wasn't enough. The second year, I won three Full Scholarships to study in the U.S. and ended up going to Washington and Lee University. I then went on to the London School of Economics where I met Cristina Bernardo and Hans Kullberg, my co-founders. Together we started Open Dreams in 2013 to help other driven students like myself follow their dreams. Since then, we have helped my own sister (see below)- who is finishing her degree at McGill University on a full scholarship, and dozens of other students in my hometown and beyond in Cameroon. We work so hard for these students, and we can assure you that 100% of your donations go towards helping scholars access college opportunities like myself.

My sister, Sonia Buma, who is finishing as a MasterCard Scholar at McGill University, teaching our students at the Open Dreams Summer Academy in Bamenda, Cameroon.

We operate our headquarters in Bamenda, Cameroon, an area that has been afflicted by a severe civil crisis over the past two years. Our students have been living in a very dangerous environment with escalating violence and numerous shootings and a nightly curfew. Yet they still persevere and come to the center whenever they can to study and obtain a scholarship that will not only change their lives, but the lives of everyone around them.

This Valentines, help us make others dreams a reality! Give your loved one the gift of education. See what your donation below will get you and give us!

Thanks again for your support.

Sincerely,
Blaise Buma and the Open Dreams Team
