Help Ship Goods to Orphanages

I am collecting goods and supplies to donate by mail to orphans in small African orphanages. Filling boxes with donated school, household, medical and other supplies will be easy, and I have a feeling I will be able to collect enough supplies to fill a large box quickly. Shipping is going to be around $80 per box, so I would like to raise enough to send the first extra-large sized box. Go to any village in Africa, and you will find dozens of little children playing with one another in the dust. Looking over them in the shade will be the grandmothers or other elders, ready to intervene when things get out of hand. If a child is hurt in the squabbles that inevitably arise, they run to soothing arms of their grandmothers.
But war, AIDS, famine have brought to Africa an entirely new concept, children with no family members, no blood relatives, no extended family members. No elders to care for them, they are lost and bereft in a cruel world, and no one seems to care.
Orphaned children are disadvantaged in numerous
and often devastating ways. In addition to the trauma
of witnessing the sickness and death of one or both
parents, they are likely to be poorer and less healthy
than non-orphans are. They are more likely to suffer
damage to their cognitive and emotional development,
less likely to go to school, more likely to be subjected
to the worst forms of child labour. Survival strategies,
such as eating less and selling assets, intensify the
vulnerability of both adults and children. The number of children living on the street is rising, most likely driven by HIV/AIDS.
Non profit orphanages in Africa are working to change the future of African orphans by involving local communities and the general public and congregations in supporting orphans and vulnerable children. Orphanages and other NGO's also pilot cost-effective and family-friendly approaches to orphan support and care, and conduct advocacy programs and educational sensitization campaigns.
