Help us preserve our history at Marble Springs, home of John Sevier, first Governor of Tennessee. Donate today!

Fellow Friends of Marble Springs,

When I was asked to serve on the board of the Governor John Sevier Memorial Association a couple of years ago, I was thrilled.  I’ve long been fascinated by the early history of the Tennessee frontier, the American Revolution, and John Sevier in particular, so getting the opportunity to participate in the preservation and interpretation of Sevier’s home was a little bit like being an astronaut-obsessed kid who’s just been given a ticket to the International Space Station.

I think Marble Springs is one of the most important places in Tennessee, because you can’t make sense of our state’s early history without first making sense of John Sevier.  As one of the Volunteer State’s first historians put it, Sevier’s life “is Tennessee history itself.”

One of the things I’ve learned since joining the board is how crucially important our supporters are in keeping the site going.  I’d always assumed that funding of state historic sites like Marble Springs basically amounted to money provided by state government.  We’re indeed fortunate to get support from state agencies, but as many of you know, we also depend on the generosity and dedication of GJSMA supporters in order to provide the programming we offer to visitors, school kids, and lovers of Tennessee history.

This year marks the bicentennial of John Sevier’s death.  To commemorate this special anniversary, GJSMA has launched a yearlong campaign called “$200 for 200.”  We’re asking everyone who’s passionate about Sevier, the site, and the history of the frontier to donate $200 in order to support the programming and operations of Marble Springs. If $200 is not in your current budget, any donation to this campaign is welcome. We also will accept pledges if you would like to make a monthly contribution to this campaign.

Each one of our $200 for 200 donors will receive the benefits of our “Sustaining” membership level and have their names listed on a special section of our website, so if you’ve been thinking about becoming a member or upgrading your membership, this would be a fantastic way to do it while simultaneously showing your support.  You can donate to the $200 for 200 campaign by sending a check to Marble Springs, P.O. Box 20195, Knoxville, TN 37940, or you can make your donation here.

For a small historic site like ours, each gift we receive has a really big impact.  That’s especially true in the current economic climate, when some of the funding sources that museums usually depend on have been cut back.  I hope you’ll join me in making a special $200 bicentennial donation, and I also hope to see you at the events we’ve planned for this year.
