We all have those things that we fantasize about and just think "Wouldn't that be amazing?". Well recently I've realized something pretty darn cool, you can actually do those things. WHAT? I know, it's hard to grasp but with enough of a little something called hard work, you can achieve almost anything you can set your mind to.
This discovery did take me some time to... well discover. I wanted to get experience volunteering with animals and who doesn't like travelling? I found a program for volunteering at an animal rescue and rehabilitation centre in Ecuador and I just saved and went for it. I didn't quite understand how INSANE it was that I was going to South America by myself, at age 16, until I was frantically running around the airport looking for someone who spoke English. Once I found my way to the home stay, I was just so amazed at myself. I couldn't believe that I legitimately completed such a wild goal, and lived to tell the tale.
Once I returned I had international volunteer/travel/exchange research fever! It's very difficult to find programs that can fit into my busy life, especially ones that accommodate a high school kid. I was feeling pretty let down until I found out about this wonderful school called Class Afloat.
Class Afloat is a Canadian-based school that is based on a tall ship that travels to 23 ports in 18 different countries. Students in the program are in grade 11 or 12 as well as first year university who exhibit exceptional academic success and leadership skills. So you can imagine how happy I was when I was accepted to join Class Afloat for the first semester of the 2013-2014 year.
I never thought of myself as the "sailor" type. In fact, the only time I sailed was when I was ten at camp and I cried when they made me practice capsizing. But since then, I have opened up so much and now I relentlessly seek out new experiences, even if they are outside of my comfort zone. This is more than just travelling on a boat, it's a new, life-changing, adventure each day.
Here's where I need YOUR help!
While everyone was running for cover in 2009 from the recession, my parents started their own business. Since the business is just growing now, there is no way that my family has the hefty $31,000 tuition fee. Although I was very disheartened by this, I just thought "There is NO way I am going to give this up."
With your support, I will be able to pay for my full tuition which covers my room and board, food, textbooks, reference materials, instruction, emergency gear and transportation at the ports among other things. You will also be supporting the amazing and committed group of teachers and staff who will be guiding us through life aboard as well as the complex school work.
Hopefully, with the combined efforts of you, my family and some hardcore local campaigning I won't have to let this wonderful opportunity go. Please donate generously, but anything that you can give is appreciated and will not go to waste! If it happens that I do not raise enough money to participate, I plan to donate my collections to a scholarship fund for other kids to take part in this wonderful program.
You can donate here on Go Fund Me, for now until I have set up a paypal option.
