Teaching Science in Kenya!

Donation protected
Hi there! So it’s official – we’re headed to Kenya this summer!!

About Our Trip:
On June 30th, three teachers from LREI (Little Red School House and Elisabeth Irwin High School) will head to Nakuru, Kenya to teach Science for 5 weeks. Our time will be divided between United Methodist Mission School in Nakuru and Fiwagoh Mission School in Gilgil. The three of us - Alisa Soriano~Kindergarten Teacher, Dan Bobrowski~Middle School Science, and Jacob Rasmussen~3rd Grade Teacher – will teach over 500 students, ranging from 6-18 years old. We are passionate progressive teachers who are hoping to create a lasting impact on the students we teach and get kids excited about Science!

Our Mission Is To…
·      Educate students using a hands-on, progressive approach where students ask questions and search for answers, applying their newfound knowledge to their real lives
·      Establish and cultivate long-lasting relationships between teachers in Kenya and the US
·      Bring new teaching practices and ideas about education back to our practice at LREI

The Curriculum:
We designed a highly interactive program, which will introduce students to a fluid way of thinking about the scientific method. In real world situations, the scientific method is not linear – it is fluid, always changing. In order for our students to apply their studies to their real lives, they must have full experiences asking questions, doing research, creating a hypothesis, testing with experiments, analyzing data, and drawing conclusions…just not necessarily in that order! Carefully planned, our classes will address multiple learning styles while focusing on topics relevant to the daily lives of our students.

The curriculum, broken down into three categories - Biology, Chemistry, and Physics - is designed to take students from passive science settings (in which students sit and listen to a lecturing teacher) to active inquiry.  Students will engage in challenges that employ critical thinking, participate in model labs that show proper experimental design, and then invent and execute their own scientific study all while reflecting on their metacognitive processes!

Our Goal:
Because the Kenyan schools are not able to pay for our flights, room and board, or our time teaching, we have set the ambitious goal of raising $5,000 by June 30th.

We were approved for a travel grant, but it only covers a portion of our flights.  As we are hoping to make our students’ experiences as rich as possible, the money raised here will go towards:
-the remainder of our plane tickets
-room and board at the schools
-in-country transportation
-curricular supplies and materials for our students.

We hope you consider supporting our goal. It goes without saying – every little bit helps. Thank you for reading.

With love and excitement,
Jacob, Dan, and Alisa

PS. Details from the trip, photos, and videos will be captured and posted for donors’ viewing pleasure, as a virtual thank you for your gift into this rewarding experience!
