Hi! If you are reading this you probably know me (but if you don't—also—hi!). My name is JD, and I make poems. I have published 2 lil chapbooks in the past: Night Errands (Winner of the 2012 Peter Meinke Prize for Poetry—YellowJacket Press, 2012) and FUNERALS & THRONES (Birds of Lace, 2013). I have been working on a full-length manuscript for a couple of years now, and left my life and career in NYC to return to school in order to work on said manuscript. I currently make ~$13,500 (yes, that's annual) right now, before taxes, rent, utilities, etc. The pennies that are left each month go towards chipping away at massive debt, including some fresh diggings in the money pit that involves a semi-truck that hit me while I was driving in December of last year.
So now that you know I'm broke, let's talk about why I am asking for your financial support(!): I was one of 80 (out of 400) people accepted into The Home School's program in Miami. The core number of faculty includes not ONLY some of my favorite living writers, but poets I genuinely believe can help me move towards a space of completeness within my manuscript. The Home School is a week-long intensive program that foregrounds interdisciplinary experimentation and collaboration—and encourages "creative recklessness".
I don't always find the experimentation in my work easy to talk about with others & this feels like the perfect opportunity to help me make sense of my work.
Tuition costs $1175. Factoring in the costs of shipping rewards, gas money to drive to Miami, and the cost of staying in an AirBnB (I'm from FL originally & can hopefully just find a couch!), I'm setting the goal of $1333 to cover my basic needs. Anything over that would HUGELY help even just feeding myself.
