Rare Disorder, Service Dog Needed

Donation protected

My name is Savannah Martin and I am a 20 year old college student who has a rare genetic neurological disorder that often leaves me paralyzed, unable to speak, and if not treated in time can become a matter of life or death. The name of this disorder is called Hypokalemic Periodic Paralysis and I was diagnosed with it the day after my first day of school during my sophomore year of highschool. In the spring of 2017, I will going to the University of Georgia where I will be completing my bachelors degree in Journalism/Mass Communication. I plan on being a disability advocate using this degree and a minor in disability studies. However, for me to be able to fullfil my educational dreams I have to take extreme considerations of my health because I can have an attack of Hypokalemic Periodic Paralyis at any given time with or without warning and sometimes have seizure like activity. This is raising a lot of concern for both my doctors and my parents. So my doctor has recommended that I get a service dog but unforentetly insurance does not cover it and non-profit organizations that help individuals cover for service dogs have about a two year waiting list and the ones in my area are not accepting any applicants at this time. So we have been given a time estimate of 4-8 months of training for the dog and approximately $13,600-$25,800 for the cost of the entire training which includes the cost of the dog, vet procedures, and training. This would mean so much to me to be able to have more freedom to live my life.
