Katelyn Garwood Cox was diagnosed with Cholangiocarcinoma (Bile Duct Cancer) in February, 2014. She is married to Bryan and has a 4 year old daughter, Hailey. She graduated from James River High School.
She is the daughter of Theresa Garwood and niece of Rhonda Finchum, Bobby Balsley and Maria Craig, all Chesterfield County School bus drivers that you may or may not already know.
Cholangiocarcinoma is a very rare disease and Katelyn has been told that she is the youngest at age 23, in the U.S. to be diagnosed. Typically this disease shows in individuals 60's and older.
This was a congenital condition for Katelyn as she was born with choledochal cysts. These were never found as a child because they have no symptoms and as an adult they attached to her liver and advanced into Stage 3 Cholangiocarcinoma. Katelyn is now in for the fight of her life and she needs our help.
She had surgery in February, 2014. They removed 70% of her liver, her gall bladder and reconstructed her bile ducts and inserted a stent. She went until May with her bile pump because it wouldn't drain properly which delayed her getting any sort of treatment. She was finally able to have the drain removed and begin radiation and chemotherapy the week of May 19, 2014. As of August, she is undergoing IV chemotherapy.
This effort is very dear to my heart because Katelyn is my niece.....by a previous marriage to Bobby Balsley, however, she will always be.....MY NIECE. I am still very close to this family. She grew up with our daughter, Samantha. I will always be Aunt Donna. I love her like she is my own daughter. I was there when this child was born into this world and I will be there to help her through this courageous battle that she has to face until she is better.
She has her family backing her all the way and she has many, many friends like you and hopefully will touch many others with her story. She needs the strength of everyone around her to get through this and remain strong.
