First of all, we would like to thank everyone for the successful and laudable campaign in 2016 to save our beloved church from being demolished. That would have been a loss not only to our community, but also to Liverpool.
We are currently in the process of raising funds and working with Liverpool Council to acquire the Memorial Church of the Protestant Martyrs in Liverpool 15.
Unfortunately, although the church was given a Grade II listing, it continues to suffer from disrepair and is dilapidated. It is clearly in a worse condition since the start of our campaign to save it; some of the stained glass is broken and it is being defiled by squatters. Consequently, it is slowly losing the very features that make it a Grade II building. Furthermore, the presence of squatters in the church constitutes a health and safety risk for our community, especially the youth.
In the face of such adverse circumstances, our organisation, Champions Community Academy, has taken it upon itself to save both the church and the youth of our community. We aim to work with our multicultural community in order to achieve that.
Sport, physical exercise and mental stimulation have been identified as a
good way to enhance the physical and mental development of our youth and to keep them off the streets, thus minimising delinquency. As to the church, we plan to use it for the above-mentioned activities without altering or damaging its architectural and historic features.
As you can surely appreciate, given the lamentable condition of the church, our task is by no means easy. It requires both financial and moral backing and any relevant expertise. We have approached Liverpool City Council with
our plans and they are sympathetic to our ambitious project. We are approaching you in order to seek any help you can provide in order for us to achieve the regeneration of our beloved building.
