Clean Water/ Sanitation Projects

VAP-EWB in Durango, Colorado is a non-profit organization established to help developing communities worldwide with their engineering needs, while involving and training a new kind of responsible student. We are students from all academic disciplines, faculty members, and community partners.
This year there are four different water and sanitation projects being developed. Two projects will construct water systems in two separate communities in Myanmar. These water systems will supply potable water to more than 1,300 people and two schools. Our goal is to build 3 water storage tanks and 38 tap stands to replace the old method of hauling water from the source.
Along with the water systems in Myanmar, there will be another two water systems developed in Nicaragua. Last year a team of Fort Lewis College students set out and installed 6000 meters of pipe and built 37 tap stands. This year the plan is to integrate last year’s project with two surrounding communities’ water systems. In all, this project will require another 2 water storage tanks and a tap stand for each family, supplying another 550 people with easy access to drinking water.
Our goals are big this year but our drive to get these tasks done is even bigger! With over 35 students, faculty, and community partners working together we believe that we can supply nearly 2000 people with clean drinking water. However, we need help to make this happen.
The average round trip plane ticket to Myanmar costs $1200-$1400, and to Nicaragua is about $600. With 16 students traveling to Myanmar and 12 students traveling to Nicaragua the total flight cost comes out to an estimated $27,000. This is only the flight cost! Materials for each project are more than $20,000. The estimate is that we will need about $70,000 in materials for all three projects. In total, this year’s trip will be an investment of roughly $100,000 in three villages and two countries.
Please help EWB make 2000 people’s dream of clean drinking water a reality this year by funding this important project. Clean drinking water is not a social right but a necessity. Please help us bring it to some of the poorest people in the world around us!
