Help save and bring Maureen home!

Donation protected
Ten months ago, Maureen Omoraka was a very pregnant mother - one who was looking forward to seeing her newborn baby. She and her husband, Robert, and their two year son were waiting expectantly for a successful delivery. But that turned into their worst nightmare. An unbelievable case of criminal negligence from the medical staff, resulted in Maureen not only losing her baby but battling for her life. For months, Maureen bleed profusely. Her loving husband and other well-meaning Nigerians donated blood and purchased blood to save her life. Yet as I write today, Maureen is still in critical condition. The doctors later discovered that she had also suffered a rupture to her bladder due to complications from birth, and further determined that her most precious gift of womanhood was damaged.

Maureen had her womb removed.

January 2014 was supposed to be a memorable and happy period for the expectant mother, her husband and their family. Instead on November 28th 2014, Maureen will be going for her final surgery to correct her bladder (November 18th is her birthday). Maureen will be receiving a life-saving surgery to suture her ruptured bladder.  The medical expenses for her care and treatment is more than 1 million Naira (~$10,000). Her family has already spent over 2.2 million Naira (~$20,000) sourced from their savings and well-meaning Nigerians. Maureen and her family needs your help to save her and bring her home.

Robert Omoraka, a childhood friend of my partner, told me of the very sad and unfortunate incident that led to this calamity. Maureen's complications started while she went to the hospital heavily pregnant and was seven days overdue for delivery. But when her baby wasn't coming, she was induced and set for a C-section where all the mistakes arose from. According to Robert, the doctor who was to perform the surgery had left Maureen in the care of nurses while she was induced. He, the doctor, had left to attend to other surgeries. Meanwhile the nurses provided inadequate care to Maureen as they had completely forgotten about her. While under sedation, Maureen called Robert times without number and all she ever could mutter to him was “please pray for me.” According to Robert, he said she sounded like she was dying during those moments. On returning to her, the doctor discovered the incompetency of the nurses and had to perform emergency surgery – an event that took the life of her newborn baby and almost killed her. As a result of the poor treatment she received that the hospital, Maureen was quickly moved to a more equipped hospital, a one and a half journey to Delta state University Teaching Hospital (DELSUTH) in Nigeria. At DELSUTH, her life was saved by more experienced and knowledgeable doctors who made every effort to salvage her troubled bladder. However, she had to wait for four months upon the doctor’s advice to allow her body produce enough tissue for her life-saving surgery. She has had to wait since January till now, depending on catheters to replace her injured bladder.

At this point, both spouses want the public to know that attempts to get the hospital to accept responsibility and bear the financial burden has failed. Legal proceedings are been explored but even that is a tasking and expensive route for Robert. His main purpose is to ensure Maureen’s full recovery.

Robert worked until early this year as a journalist but soon lost his job as time was increasingly spent at his wife’s sick bed. Despite all, more funds are needed more than ever to enable Maureen to get the surgery she needs to repair her bladder. From now till the Nov. the 28th, Maureen needs approximately $10, 000 to cover her medical bills. The Omoraka family has counted on the public to help and they believe their hope will be fulfilled again.

So please, make a donation and help bring Maureen home. I am challenging you to please make a donation of $50 or better $100. You do so not only to save Maureen’s life and give hope to her family but also to raise awareness of hospital negligence and birth mortality in Nigeria and other developing countries. This is a pressing and inconceivable issue that many women in Nigeria still go through – incompetent medical staff to safely deliver their children.

I urge you to please make a donation of $50 or $100 (any amount is greatly appreciated) to this GoFundMe account or directly to Robert’s bank account (see below). Robert is very pleased to speak to anyone in great detail about his family travails. Please give him a call. Also, if you know anyone or have been a victim of hospital negligence in Nigeria or any other country, leave a comment. There is strength in communicating. Together we can do something to improve the quality of healthcare that we receive in our countries. Most importantly, leave a prayer or encouraging word for Maureen and her family because they need it.

Thank you again.
