It is with deepest regret to announce that Ronan Winter has passed away on May 10th, 2014 at 11:50pm. Each of us not only grieves at the passing of such a tremendous human being, but also for the great loss that his family suffers. Our grief and sorrow at this time are little compared to what Ronans family is feeling. Our hearts and prayers are with Diane, Keelan and Keara.
The following is a message of beautiful words written from Diane:
"On Saturday, May 10, 2014 we spent the day listening to music, talking about the past and dreaming of the future. We held hands, my husband and I. I told him I loved him and stroked his hair. I sat silently and contemplated our life together. The funny times with our beautiful girls, the joyous times spent with family and friends, and the many ups and the few downs of our marriage. I whispered words of comfort in his ear and put a cool cloth on his forehead. I recounted some stories and smiled as if it was yesterday. Then, I came back to the moment, to the bedroom, to the hospital bed holding my husband, and cried. And then cried some more. He was not responding. No reassuring hug, or even a reassuring look, he was slipping into the active stage of dying and so he wouldn't wake. I knew this. I also knew this was our day, and that he could hear me still. I continued talking with him and loving him. As the evening wore on, I left the room for a moment and when I walked back in, my soul mate, the love of my life, Ronan, passed away gently in his sleep. I was calm and knew he would want it that way.
May your journey be swift and smooth honey, and as you always say
"May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
The rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of his hand.."
I love you, always and forever.
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!
Alex and I would like to thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts for the tremendous amount of support in helping us to aid the Winter family in their time of need. Not only did we reach our initial goal but we have surpassed it in such a short amount of time. We never expected this much of a response from such compassionate and generous people. Gratitude may seem like a simple emotion, but it does inspire a connection and you have all definitely helped us feel that connection this week. All of the heartfelt messages and stories posted along with the donations have been both emotional and uplifting at the same time. Ronan is loved by so many all around the world and we feel so blessed and honored to know him. Many of the stories posted by others has brought us to tears and has given us a bigger insight as to how well respected he truly is. Ronans enthusiasm for life was spread all over the world throughout his travels and he has touched so many people along the way"¦everyone he has ever met has nothing but delightful words and jubilant memories or stories to share about him. He is definitely leaving this world with an incredible impact on so many people. For the gracious humanity that has been shown through this site we could just imagine hearing Ronan say "Brilliant Job Alex! , Michelle, she's brilliant!" in his lovely Irish brogue.
Because of how fast this campaign has grown in such a short amount of time, it's been quite a challenge to keep up with all of the messages, phone calls, and even media emails coming in. Alex and I apologize if we haven't yet responded to some of you, please know that we will definitely be personally responding at some point in the near future. It has been quite a journey and difficult to keep up with over 2000 emails in such a short period of time.
Since It has been brought to our attention that people are questioning as to whether or not they can still donate, the answer is YES, WE STILL WELCOME ALL DONATIONS! This has brought us to the difficult decision as to whether or not we would or should continue this funding campaign. When setting the goal amount we had no idea how much support we would get and so we just threw out a number to work towards. After great thought and careful consideration we have decided to continue with fundraising and after seeking some sound advice we also made the decision to raise the goal to $200,000.00. This will help people in realizing that the funding is indeed still ongoing and at the same time continue to help the Winter family as long and as much as possible.
On behalf of the Winter family we appreciate all of your generosity and compassion for Ronan, Diane, Keelan, and Keara Winter.
Michelle & Alex
I want to start off by giving my heartfelt gratitude for all the love and support from all around the world for this campaign. Because of all the media and the strangers who are trying to say this is a scam I feel that is it necessary to answer some questions as to why we started this campaign.
My name is Michelle Nagelvoort, my family is very close friends with the Winter family here in California. Keelan and my daughter Alex are best friends who are practically with each other every day. In addition to myself and Alex's own father, Alex has always looked up to Ronan & Diane as additional parental figures and amazing mentors. Along with our daughters, Diane and I are the best of friends and although we are not family, I feel as close to her as I do my own sister.
We started this campaign because the Winter family is suffering not only emotionally but financially. It has been hard to sit back and watch their world come crumbling down. If we could afford to help them on our own, then this campaign would never exist and Alex and I wouldn't have had to reach out asking for donations. Everyone needs help at some point in their lives and this is their time of need. My daughter and I thought long and thoroughly on how to best help them and we felt that GOFUNDME was an excellent source to use to achieve what we feel is necessary in helping their situation. This is something that we could do on the sidelines without having to interrupt their lives as they are going through this difficult journey.
The Winters are an amazing HARDWORKING family who would give the shirts off of their own backs to help a fellow human in need, all that know them truly can attest to that. Ronans passion for life and his infectious happy outlook was loved by all and it breaks my heart that they are going through this. Diane, Keelan and Keara are being left behind; they will need great financial help. The campaign amount that we set will not nearly cover what will be needed to support this young family and their future but we felt even a small amount will benefit them in their time of need.
For those of you questioning where this money will go, it will be put into a personal account for the Winter Family that only Mrs. Winter will be the recipient of. The funds will go to help her pay their current daily mounting bills which include mortgage, utilities, healthcare, food, transportation, daily living expenses, etc. as well as helping towards future costs of Keelan and Keara's college education. This is to help assure that Mrs. Winter will not lose her home and can still provide for her family's current and future needs.
It makes me sad to think that there are people out there who feel compelled to complain about what we are doing. But I remain steadfast and proud of what we are trying to accomplish and appreciate all of the ongoing support.
We want to thank you all for your continued support for the Winter family. The outpouring of love for Ronan and his beloved family is beyond marvelous and it couldn't be for a more deserving family.
Ronan is remaining comfortable and is facing this terrible battle with bravery and grace while his family remains at his side.
Diane is very grateful for all of the heartfelt messages. Please understand that at this time she may not be able to answer each one personally but she is reading them and appreciates all the kind words of compassion and love for Ronan, Diane, Keelan, and Keara.
Ronan is resting at home and is under the great care and watch of hospice and his family. He has a strong heart and he continues to keep fighting. Ronan has suffered a stroke, which makes it very difficult for him to eat or speak, but he is remaining pain free through his final days. The family is giving him tremendous support with all of their love, and they thank you for your prayers and positive thoughts as well as your kind donations. Please continue sharing the page. Thank you.
This message from a friend of Ronans says it all, Ronan is so well loved all around the world, he has touched so many people...
"Ronan, you are my best friend and the brother I never had. The world is a better place with you in it. Your smile, your laughter and your positive spirit has for ever touched me. You will always be in my thoughts and a compass for how to be a better man. Diane, Keelan, Keara, you are family to us. I am so, so sad and sorry you are all going through this. Thank you to all the friends and strangers who are helping out. If anyone deserves help, Ronan and his family are the ones. Sending all my love and prayers."
This has spread like wildfire! Our experience has been so positive and overwhelming all at once. We are so grateful for the incredible amount of support and love being sent from all over the world. On behalf of the Winter family, we cannot thank you enough!
I cant even think of the right words to express the gratitude I feel for all the generous donations to the Winters. Thank you to all of the friends, family and even the strangers who have opened up their hearts to donate to this wonderful family. I also want to thank all the people who have donated from Imgur, Until today, I did not know Imgur even existed. Mr. Winters picture is remaining at the top and getting so many hits all around the world, technology is amazing, YOU are amazing, thank you Imgur fans! If everyone would please continue to share this site, at this rate I am confident that we can reach our goal.
As we prepare to say farewell to our charming Ronan, we are all reminded of the beauty that can come from all of this sorrow. The kind messages and generous donations are unbelievable and we are all truly grateful for the tremendous outpouring of love from all of you. Your overwhelming generosity will help to ensure a life filled with opportunity and peace of mind for Ronan and Diane's beautiful daughters Keelan & Keara.
