Robson Square Salsa Summer 2016

CAMPAIGN UPDATE: Thank you to everyone who has donated and supported the campaign and helped us reach our GoFundMe fundraising target for this summer's Robson Square Salsa and Kizomba dances.

It's a phenomenal thing that just happened, the dance community rallying to support this summer's Robson Square dances. Any donations received after this point will be designated for the 2017 season, or for additional expenses this year (a number of people have enquired about Robson Square t-shirts, an additional expense we could consider).

See you at Robson Square this summer!

2016 marks the 10th anniversary of Sunday Afternoon Salsa at Robson Square and this year promises to be bigger and better than ever!

If you’re in downtown Vancouver on a Sunday in July or August and it’s after 3pm, you know you'll be heading to Robson Square to join the dancers under the Robson Square domes.  Started in 2006 by Jennifer and Stephen Dancey of the Dancey Studios (yes, Dancey really is their last name), Sunday Afternoon Salsa at Robson Square runs every summer, rain or shine, completely FREE to the public.

Jennifer and Stephen, with their legion of volunteers, have nurtured this once small, spontaneous dance event for Vancouver salsa dancers into a huge community event that is now one of the highlights of the Vancouver summer festival season.  To say that Sunday Salsa at Robson Square is one of the most favourite social dance events of the year in Vancouver would be an understatement.  It has grown so much that calling it Sunday “Salsa” is a bit of a misnomer, as now the dance floor is filled with Salsa, Bachata, Merengue, and Kizomba dancers; and last year it added an official Kizomba afterparty which kept dancers going for an additional few hours into the evening!

If you're part of Vancouver's Salsa and Kizomba dance community, you already know that dancing at Robson Square on Sunday afternoons in the summer is an amazing experience
. Many people say it's their favourite dance event of the year with the huge attendance, the great music, and the welcoming and inclusive atmosphere. What you may not know is the event is expensive to run, and the Robson Square dances rely 100% on donations and sponsorship to survive.

Estimated costs of Sunday Salsa this year will top about $10,000, the largest costs being the venue rental fees to use the Robson Square plaza for the nine Sundays in July and August, and essential expenses including the cost for access to use the washrooms and janitorial services, rental of the sound system and setup, insurance and more.

Thankfully Sunday Afternoon Salsa at Robson Square receives sponsorship support from the Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association, but that only covers about 50% of this year's operating costs.  So we are turning to you, our wonderful dancers, to support the event in any amount that you can.

The GoFundMe fundraising goal of $5,000 will cover the expenses not already met by the existing event sponsorship.  Consider this: typical admission to a dance event usually costs about $10. How many Sundays do you think you'll attend  Robson Square this summer?

Help keep the Robson Square Salsa and the Kizomba Afterparty going this summer and for many more years to come!

Thank you for your support.
