Save the 1942 CA-3 U.P. Caboose

Donation protected
Hello:
My name is Eriks Garsvo and I am the project manager on the restoration of the 1942 Union Pacific Caboose at the Nampa Train Depot & Museum in Nampa Idaho. I am currently a student at Boise State University and working toward my masters in History. I am a volunteer with the Canyon County Historical Society and have been with them four years now and have noticed that many of our visitors to the museum come to see the caboose.

The Union Pacific Railroad donated the caboose to the museum in 1988 and there have only been minor renovations inside to keep water from coming in. I have stepped up to lead the restoration project as I believe that this is an important piece of railroad history.  This class of caboose which is a CA-3 class would be the first to have an all steel exterior and a center cupola. The caboose was built by the Mount Vernon Car Company of Illinois and the design would become a trademark for Union Pacific cabooses.

These cabooses were originally painted in freight car red and we plan on taking the caboose back to the original red paint and its white lettering. The original number on the caboose was 3776 which will also go back on the caboose. There were 99 CA-3 cabooses built and ours is number 76 making it very special as there are roughly only 34 remaining cabooses of this style left.

If we get the money raised we have a real opportunity for the society to restore a unique piece of railroad history. Not only did this style of caboose become a standard for the Union Pacific Railroad but this caboose was used locally on the main line and branch lines of Idaho.

Please help me and the soceity in restoring the Caboose
