Respite House Needs a Facelift

Tax deductible
Helping Hands Respite Care is a nonprofit agency serving Ingham, Eaton, and Clinton County in mid- Michigan by providing a variety of care programs to meet the needs of individuals from age 3 to 95 who have beene diagnosed with a disability. The disability can be anything from Autism to Alzheimer's Disease.

A very popular program is the weekend Respite House which is for guests to have a 48 hour sleep-over experience filled with planned activities, socialization, and community event immersion. The Respite House is staffed with caregivers who follow a comprehensive care plan for each of four children or young adult guests with cognitive or physical delays. The weekend Respite House provides a much needed break for the family caregiver(s) who are required to be "on" 24/7.  There is generally a waiting list for families to schedule their respite weekend.  Hear what Executive Director, John Stauffer has to say about the weekend Respite House.

Stauffer describes the benefit to families that the Respite House offers.

We are raising funds to refurbish or give a facelift to the interior of this well-maintained bungalow.  The kitchen and bathroom need much attention.  The appliances in the kitchen need to be updated, this includes a refrigerator/freezer, stove top and oven.  These appliances are well over 25 years old, handles and knobs are missing and they are not energy efficient appliances.

John Stauffer details more of the needs, especially updating the bathroom to make entrance into the bathroom shower easier and safer.  You will see that every room needs window coverings, paint, and of course appropriate beds and linens.

Because of who we serve, over the course of a 2-day weekend, we will also do 10 or more loads of laundry.
There are often bathroom accidents and all of the bed linens will need to be washed at least once over the course of the weekend. The washer and dryer in the basement are on their last legs and a pair (or two) of high energy efficient machines would be amazing.  See the photo below.

We are blessed to have some professionals on our Board of Directors  who will have the ability to provide labor, so most of our funds will be needed to purchase the materials and the appliances.

Our goal is to have the funds and materials available so we can complete the facelift in late August, early September of 2016.

We will also consider any other in-kind gifts.  Our wish list over and above the described projects includes:

- A full freezer for the basement so we can shop and store groceries economically.

-A generator to plug into our already wired receptacles. This would be so great to keep our guests safe and warm during the occasional power outages.

- Functional hospital beds, linens, dressers, and in-window blinds.

- An adult-sized stroller for taking walks outside or taking field trips.

- Handicap picnic table for the beautiful backyard as it is not unusual to have two guests per weekend who make use of a wheelchair.

Any help provided would be so wonderful and make the weekend Respite House experience so much better. Please follow Helping Hands Respite Care on Facebook as we will be including updates and photos all along the way.
