Send Wawan to America- Circus Study Trip
Wawan Kuriawan is 18-years-old and lives in a slum village in North Jakarta, Indonesia,
and has his sights set on a life changing journey to the United States this
Summer.
Wawan hasn't been to school for more
than six years "“ he dropped out of school when his family moved to Jakarta in the
6th grade due poverty and being unable to pay for education. In 2009,
Wawan joined the Red Nose Foundation and has dedicated himself to his circus arts and English
language studies, while also working at a traditional restaurant (warung) to
help support his family.
Wawan now has the opportunity to travel to the United States and Canada to continue his
circus training for three-months in the summer of 2013. While in the United States, he will train with Paul Miller at
Circus Mojo in Ludlow, Kentucky and with several groups in Chicago, IL. In late
June, he will travel to Vancouver to train with Travis Johnson and the
Vancouver Circus School team.
This life changing opportunity will allow Wawan to experience the world outside
of his slum village, Cilincing, in North Jakarta. It will also give him the
opportunity to gain valuable skills that he can then use to build his career as
a social circus instructor and circus performer.
Most of all, though, Wawan is excited to be learning new skills that he can
share with his peers at the Red Nose Foundation when he returns home to
Jakarta.
