Rally for PAWS Cats

PAWS Animal Welfare Society, Inc., founded in 2008, is a cat rescue service, non-profit, no-kill organization located in Fort Kent, Maine situated in the picturesque St. John Valley bordering Canada. Our mission is to reduce the number of unwanted cats and kittens, improve the well-being of all cats and to promote responsible pet care in the St. John Valley communities.

Two and a half years ago we reached our goal of having our own shelter. This project was very successful and has met our needs but we decided in 2017 that we need to expand our shelter to more than double its current size. The purpose of this expansion is to improve our workflow within the shelter and to have a greater presence in the community. In October, the Elmina B. Sewall Foundation granted our request for $35,000 to complete the construction of the building plus we will be using funds we have set aside over the years towards the project. In addition, we are having several fundraisers again this year. All of these efforts will help us reach our goal of having a shelter that will meet everyone’s needs – the volunteers who work daily at the shelter, the cats who spend time with us before moving to their permanent homes and the people who want to see and/or adopt the cats.

Why Help?
Although we are doing everything we can to raise all the funds needed for this major project, we are asking anyone who would like to help us to do so. The people in the St. John Valley have been very supportive of our work over the years and we are very grateful to them. In turn we have helped hundreds of pet owners when they needed to have their cats spayed or neutered more affordably and when their cats needed emergency medical care. We have also provided services, such as, lending traps and giving people advice. We want to continue offering our help to the many homeless cats in the community, reduce the number of cats that are unwanted and help people take excellent care of their cat.

From an internal standpoint, our greater capacity will benefit our many volunteers by improving our workflow and giving us more storage space. The cats will have more space to roam and greater opportunity for exercise. From an external standpoint, a larger facility will be more visible and allow us to offer programs we cannot offer now, such as, tours and presentations. There will be more opportunity for volunteering with our increased space and amenities. More pet owners who need financial assistance will become aware of the help we offer. As a result of having more educational programs onsite and being open to the public more often, more cats will be placed in loving homes.

Each year, since we began in 2008, we have been very successful in improving our operation. We now have the opportunity to bring the quality of care and service we provide the cats we rescue and the public to a level that will serve the communities in the St. John Valley for years into the future. Your support in helping us do that would be greatly appreciated
