Rachelle Jahnke is a daughter, sister, friend, singer, dancer, and a 17 year old who has big plans for the future.
Two years ago Rachelle started experiencing memory issues in school. At the time they thought it was because of a recent concussion. Instead of getting better, like most concussion's do, she kept getting worse. She started experiencing fatigue, reading and writing difficulty, vision issues, emotional issues. Her balance and hearing were effected and she started having seizures, and extreme headaches that never go away. It became so bad that Rachlle had to take a medical leave from school.
After an MRI they found she had a small cystic tumor in her pineal region. Many neurologists feel that these tumors are not a concern, but with her symptoms we knew better. Candace contacted world renowned Neurosurgeon, Dr. Dong Kim. Dr. Kim leads the clinical neuroscience efforts for the Memorial Hermann Healthcare System as well as The University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston. He specializes in tumors located in this part of the brain, which is the very center. After looking at Rachelle's medical records and having his team of neurologists exam her, he advised surgery.
The Jahnke's are so happy that she may have some relief in sight, but are nervous. On April 22, 2015 she will undergo very invasive brain surgery to remove this tumor. Most likely it is benign, but it's impossible to tell until it is removed.
Rachelle and her mother will spend three weeks in the Houston area before Dr. Kim will allow her to fly home to Colorado.
The Jahnke's are hoping to raise some money to help the them pay for Rachelle's medical bills, flights to Houston, and lodging in the Houston area after she is discharged from the hospital.
The Jahnke's are thankful for any financial contributions, but ask for prayers first. Rachelle's dream is to go to college on a performing arts scholarship. Hopefully one day soon she will be dancing and singing again so she can reach that dream.
Rachelle's friends from high school are putting on a benefit concert at Canyon View Vineyard Church Chapel, April 10, at 7:30. It's going to be some great vocal music and a silent auction to follow.
