Save Dave from becoming Homeless!

Dave’s Story

“In May 2014, I had my first stroke. I had 3 more before I was hospitalized. It took 3 months after being released before I was able to receive limited therapy. On my own, I have relearned to walk with a cane, my left arm doesn’t work yet, I have left sided weakness, and I’m nearly blind in my right eye. I also have major memory issues.

I have been receiving temporary CA state disability but that stopped in March 2015. The hospital arranged it for me. I haven’t had any contact with a caseworker since and only know that I was receiving the money each month, no follow up contact number, nothing…..

I was denied disability even though I’m not mentally or physically able to work yet. I don’t understand the paperwork and have been trying to find assistance for months to no avail. I have contacted numerous social services agencies and have not received any help.

I am homeless as of March 31st. I need help. I struggle just trying to recover and being homeless will more than likely rob me of what I've managed to regain on my own.

I need a place to call home so I may continue my quest to regain myself.”

My Request

I met Dave in an online support group. Over the past few months I watched him improve tremendously. However, he still has a much greater distance to go, both physically and mentally.

He only shared with me yesterday his financial situation. He has always been self-sufficient and he tried for months on his own to find help. He is alone in the area, no family or friends to help. This unfortunately happens after a stroke. He has tried for months to do it himself. To find the answers and help he so desperately needs.

I have been on the phone for the past 8 hours calling every agency in the San Diego area. No one can help. This is a last resort attempt to keep Dave in the room he rents so we have time to get him the help he needs to complete the necessary paperwork to receive disability and continue with his recovery.

Anything you can give would be an amazing gift.

We are only asking for $700 to cover April’s rent but if we could get $1400 that would be great! 2 months rent would give him the time to deal with the slowness of the system and make other living arrangements (the wait for transitional housing is 6-8 weeks).

Even with all the struggles he faces, he still tries to volunteer as much as his body will let him for local animal shelters. He also helps other survivors and their families by being a survivor administrator in Stroke Talk for Caregivers, a Facebook support group.

Please help Dave continue with his recovery so he may lead the productive life he wants and contribute to society again!

Any additional funds raised will be left in the account for the next stroke survivor in need of emergency assistance.
