Zoe’s Story
(Please read the entire story)
On January 8, 2003 Zoe came into this world. A baby girl! Gabe has a baby sister, how exciting. Except, Zoe was delivered limp and lifeless. The team of doctors and nurses worked on her for what seemed like an eternity. Zoe’s mother finally got to hold her new baby daughter for a very brief moment before they whisked her away. Throughout the pregnancy, Heidi (Zoe’s mother) was sick. Sicker than what seemed normal. The doctors assured her everything was fine and the pregnancy was normal. But Heidi knew deep down something was not right. She was not wrong.
By the time Zoe was a year old the doctors told Heidi that Zoe would probably be in a wheelchair her entire life and she should start coming to terms with the possibility of a feeding tube. Heidi refused to believe that. Instead it was a steady stream of specialist and therapy. No feeding tube was ever inserted. Zoe is not permanently wheelchair bound. She does require the use of a wheelchair but Zoe is a fighter and refuses to use the wheelchair until her body is so fatigued she has no choice. Zoe just wants to be like all the other kids. She tries hard but her body just does not want to always cooperate with her. Zoe never lets anything hold her back. She has all the same hopes and dreams as any other child. She talks about what she wants to be when she grows up. She worries about how her hair looks, what clothes she wants to wear to school just like any other 12 year old girl.
Zoe was diagnosed with a form of Cerebral Palsy. She attends a charter school with all the “normal” children. She has a special desk and touch screen computer. She cannot write and her speech is hard to understand. She is by no means not intelligent. She keeps up with her peers academically. She has a positive can-do attitude. Zoe has a smile that can light up any room and a cheerful bubbly personality. To meet Zoe is to love her, instantly.
A short while ago there was a contest for children with cerebral palsy to have a chance to win a specially modified bicycle. There were so many deserving contestants. Zoe was entered into this contest with the hopes of winning a bicycle specially modified that she could ride. Unfortunately she did not win one of them. She didn’t let on if she was disappointed instead said maybe the next time.
I am Zoe’s grandmother. I love this precious gift from God more than you can imagine. I cannot bear for her to be disappointed by not winning the next one. This child has had to face enough hardship and disappointment in her short 12 years on this earth, all the while maintaining her positive attitude. For this reason I would like to set up a “Go Fund Me” account to raise the money to purchase the bicycle for her. She deserves this. Her life has been a constant battle. I ask you, all my family, friends, colleagues and acquaintances to help make this incredible young lady’s life a little happier.
P.S. I think I may tell her she won this. She actually will have by winning your love and support.
