Empowering Youth In Kathmandu

 What is the Umbrella Foundation?

The Umbrella Foundation is a family-first, children’s charity working to relieve the impact of trafficking, poverty and war on the children of Nepal through projects that promote education, reintegration and community development.

What Does the Umbrella Foundation Do?

Founded in 2005, The Umbrella Foundation works hard to protect the youth of Nepal, providing opportunities and advocacy as a way of preventing and reducing human trafficking.  Nearly 41% of Nepal's population is made up of children, this is nearly 13 million children that are extremely vulnerable to the growing issue of human trafficking that is heavily concentrated in Nepal.  Umbrella has created 3 separate children's homes that provide a safe and healthy environment for youth who have been separated from their families due to a multitude of reasons such as trafficking or poverty. Umbrella works hard to try and relocate the families of the children, working to reintegrate them back into their homes and communities.

What Will I Be Doing?

I am an avid believer in the power of advocacy for the healthy development of children.  I believe that advocacy is the key to youth empowerment, and in order for a child to be able to see their full potential, they need people in their lives who promote these ideas, and advocate for their needs.  During my three month's with Umbrella, I will be living and working with other volunteers to help advocate and provide support for the children of Umbrella.  I will be working in the Umbrella offices, helping with different advocacy projects and programming, as well as spending time in the children's homes, hanging out, playing, helping with homework, going on field trips and just getting to know the kids.

Why Fund Umbrella Foundation Through Me?

Unlike many overseas volunteer opportunities, the Umbrella Foundation is an extremely ethical program.  All funding is received on a donation-only basis, and goes directly to the needs and care of the Umbrella children.  One of the conditions of my volunteer agreement is that I raise a minimum of $1500 before my arrival in Nepal. Roughly $490 of this will go toward paying for my own accommodation in the volunteer house, 2 meals a day provided by Umbrella, and the general costs of running the volunteer program.  The rest of the $1000 goes directly to the care of the Umbrella children.

My Promise To You

I am still in awe of just how fortunate I am to have such an amazing opportunity.  It will be exciting to share with all of you my experiences during this epic journey I am about to embark on.  I promise to keep you in the loop through emails, pictures, and posts, on all the work that Umbrella is doing to advocate for the children of Nepal. Hopefully, when I return, I will bring newly learned advocacy tools and insights home with me that I will continue to apply throughout my life.  Gratitude fills me daily as I think of all the beautiful people that I have in my life, and this is chance to “pay it forward” in some small way.  Thank you in advance for helping me to reach my fundraising goal for the Umbrella Foundation and most importantly, for being a part of my life!
