Hi! I'm Caitlin, and I decided to swallow my pride and try to use this site to help me transtition out of sex work and into nursing.
In college I majored in feminist and gender studies out of an interest in human sexuality and reproductive justice. Upon graduation I started waitressing and looking for work in nonprofits, but it was never enough to pay my bills, which include some substantial student loans. This is when I started stripping. I figured it would be a good way to earn a living while also exploring my interests in sexuality and gender performance.
It's been over three years since I started, and I'm nearly broken. There's nothing inherently wrong with sex work, but as a society we treat sex workers as subhuman. I'm having trouble making the money I need because I suffer from PTSD due to sexual assaults I've experienced both inside and outside the club. I have to fend off people trying to penetrate me on an almost daily basis, and the club does not do everything it can to protect its workers.
I've decided to transition into nursing. It's a stable career, and I can use it to accomplish feminist goals. As a nurse I'd like to do outreach on sexual education and reproductive health. However, before I can start nursing school, I need to take eight prerequisite classes: Biology I, Anatomy and Physiology I and II, Microbiology, Algebra, Statistics, Human Growth and Development, and Nutition. Each class will cost about $500 at the local community college.
I don't know how much longer I can handle being a stripper, and I don't want to just scrape by. I want to do something positive with my life. The money that I'm asking for will pay for the prereqs I need to take. I promise, I'm going to make you guys proud.
