Proud Theater Inclusion Training

Proud Theater is an innovative youth theater program whose mission is "to change the world through the power of theater and the theater arts, and to make a positive difference in the lives of LGBTQ+ and allied youth through the tenets of art, heart, and activism". Founded in 1999 in Madison, Wisconsin, there are now six chapters in the state. Proud Theater is open to youth ages 13 to 19 who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning or who are allied with the queer community (LGBTQ+).
Proud Theater works with youth to create performance pieces that accurately portray their authentic life experiences. These pieces are then performed in a year end show as well as for local schools, administrators, and wherever else we are invited. By sharing our experiences we hope to increase awareness of the issues that LGBTQ+ youth face today. All mentors involved with Proud Theater are volunteers, and seasonally commit between 5 and 40 hours weekly to the functioning of the organization.
Proud Theater is dedicated to an inclusive environment for people of all demographics. We understand that we are not all socialized in a way that facilitates inclusive behavior. It is our goal to be intentional in the training of our leadership to overcome individual barriers with regards to those who are different from ourselves.
We are fundraising to provide quality training to our leadership in this area. We have set our goal based on the cost of the base level training provided by our local YWCA: Creating Equitable Organizations (plus the fees that are necessary for utilizing this platform). This training is intended to cover topics such as: basic cultural competency, cross-cultural communication skills, understanding racial inequalities and disparities, as well as exploring the part we can all play in advancing equal access to resources.
