Steve Percha's New Deck

Steve Percha is a 2003 graduate of Walled Lake Central High School and a December 2007 graduate of the University of Michigan School of Mechanical Engineering.  In February of 2008 Steve suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury while visiting Washington DC. Steve spent months in hospitals (both Bethesda and University of Michigan) and now going on seven years of at least five days a week of various forms of rehab trying to regain the ability to walk on his own, use of his left arm, and see and speak more clearly.  Steve’s parents have both taken early exits from their jobs to care for and provide transportation and support as Steve tries to return to his former life.

The Percha’s home of 32 years is a quad level home which presents severe challenges for a person with very limited mobility.  The Perchas, with assistance and through fund raisers like an annual golf tournament have completed several interior projects to accommodate Steve’s challenges, but is it still very difficult for Steve to spend time outside. A deck on the back of the house would allow Steve access to fresh air, sunshine and friends around a bonfire, things that Steve enjoys greatly but now take a tenuous three person effort to get him down the back steps to the patio about 36 inches below the main floor level.  

We have volunteers ready and willing to build a deck for Steve in May so he can enjoy the outdoors this summer, we just need the materials. Please consider making a donation to help Steve and his family. Any excess funds will be put towards Steve's therapy as he continues to improve every day.
