Pearl Harbor Band Trip 2016

What comes to mind when you think of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii? Though it has been 75 years, for many it’s the Dec. 7, 1941 Japanese attack on the U.S. naval base. President Franklin D. Roosevelt called Dec. 7, 1941, “a date which will live in infamy.” All total, 2,403 Americans lost their lives that day in the attack. The next day, the U.S. declared war on Japan and entered World War II.

In December 2016, a combined band made up of students from Burke County Public Schools’ four high schools will travel as one to represent North Carolina and experience the history of Pearl Harbor first‐hand as they take part in the 75th Commemoration of the Bombing of Pearl Harbor ceremonies. The bands will be part of two Cemetery Commemorations, on Dec. 5 and Dec. 8, 2016, and the Pearl Harbor National Parade on Dec. 7, 2016.

Burke County Public Schools would like for every band student (approximately 450 students) to have the opportunity to participate in this once‐in‐a‐lifetime trip. The cost of the trip will be around $2,500 per person. The students will be responsible for raising the money for their cost of the trip, and the purpose of this campaign is to ask for your contribution to help our band students. Your gift of any amount would be greatly appreciated and will certainly impact band students on what will be a life‐changing trip. Monies received to Burke County Public Schools for the Hawaii band trip will be divided among the four high schools to help defer the cost of the trip.
