Northeast Avian Rescue Facility

Northeast Avian Rescue (NEAR) was formed in October 2013, as a rescue for abused, neglected and otherwise unwanted parrots and other exotic pet birds. Operated out of the founders' home, the rescue has steadily grown, to the point that the birds are literally everywhere. The house is almost literally bursting at the seams. At any given time there are upward of eighty or more birds in the rescue, and always more surrenders waiting for an open cage.
Over the summer, we realized that we have reached our saturation point with the rescue and we just will not be able to expand any further at our present location. With that in mind, we set out to find an acceptable location fro an expansion. At first we were drawn to some very close fixer-upper properties that we might be able to upgrade and make suitable for an expansion. Frustratingly, we realized these properties were in such poor condition that we would ultimately need to tear them down in order to even THINK about using them for the rescue's purposes.
From the pre-built option, we moved on to looking at vacant land. Our search took us all over Rensselaer and Albany Counties. With ever greater disappointment, we learned that the only nearby properties in our price range were on terrain which rendered them unusable for even a small house, let alone a larger rescue facility. Never faltering, we cast a wider net and maximum price point in the hopes of finding something useable. When we were almost to the point of giving up, an opportunity almost literally fell into our lap.
The property on Turner Road in the town of Schaghticoke (technically the town of Spiegeltown), New York, was not yet on the market, but we discovered it while inquiring about another property listed by the same owner. The property, five acres, is nearly perfect for the needs of the rescue and, even better, is listed below even our original not-to-exceed price point. We are now, as we say, off to the races!

The funds raised from this GoFundMe campaign will assist in allowing NEAR to build the only dedicated parrot and exotic bird rescue facility in Eastern New York and Western New England. This facility will increase our current space for rescues by four to five times its current capacity, AND will provide space for quarantine and boarding as well as meeting and office space which can be used by NEAR staff and as an outreach to our local communities, by other small rescues who don't have dedicated space of their own.
In a nutshell, the facility will provide:
* More space for the birds currently awaiting adoption.
* Room to grow and serve a greater regional need.
* Space for indoor/outdoor aviary flights to enrich the lives of birds in the rescue.
* Meeting and temporary office spaces to be offered, free of charge, to other local and regional rescues.
The folks at NEAR are very excited at this massive opportunity to better serve the parrots and exotic birds entrusted to our care. But we can't do it without YOU! Your generous donations have always been the key to the rescue's success and will be absolutely critical to the success of this facility project. We hope you will choose to join us on this journey!
