Sierra Guyton - Strong #FCU

On Friday, March 13, 2015 our beloved daughter, niece, granddaughter, cousin, friend, natural athlete, and bff, Sierra Guyton, was diagnosed with (ALL) Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia. Leukemia is a type of blood cancer and there are various types of leukemia, however, ALL seems to be the most common. Nothing is common, for our family, when it comes to cancer. This is cancer of the white blood cells, these are the ones that help your body fight infections. Blood cells are formed in your bone marrow, but with leukemia, the bone marrow produces abnormal white blood cells that are considered useless and tend to crowd out the healthy blood cells making it hard for “blood to do its work”.

What led to her diagnoses?

She suffered with a cough that began back in October of 2014 and yet Sierra never succumbed to feeling out of sorts as she went mountain climbing with her Aunt, played intense Volleyball with her team, and generally still felt very energetic. Sometime early this year she had flu like symptoms and this time Sierra was not herself. She was experiencing a pronounced decrease in energy and spirit. She just could not bounce back. Michelle, her mom, asked her physician to run additional tests on Sierra’s blood including: Valley Fever, Mononucleosis, and Leukemia was also included in that selection.

Sierra's Mom was notified, by phone, on Friday evening that she needed to pick up Sierra from her night out, with friends, at the Ostrich Festival and immediately admit her to the Phoenix Children’s Hospital. There, a day later, they performed a bone marrow biopsy on her spine and determined that she had ALL. Today, she was started on several types of chemotherapy (IV, Oral and Spinal), along with steroids to help boost the chemotherapy treatments and to give her some energy (together with dozens of other meds to counter the effects of the chemo and compromised immune system. She will be in the hospital on and off until they can put the cancer into remission.   Doctors told her to expect 2 years of chemo.  Sierra is looking at the next few years of her life in uncertainty, but with strength of character and abundant hope for the treatment to wipe-out her cancer.

Sierra is a bright and beautiful 15-year-old freshman at Hamilton High School. Sierra has a very lengthy and costly cancer battle ahead of her, including frequent chemotherapy and daily medications. Like any form of medical treatment, you start at one end of the spectrum and work your way to the other each time increasing the strength of the treatment. In Sierras case she is at the beginning and scared of what is to come.

What does the family need?

Sierra’s family has setup this fund to help with the substantial medical expenses that they will soon face. Her Mother has taken an unpaid leave from work and devotes her time to Sierra’s wellbeing. Your contributions will help cover medical bills and co-pays (above what the insurance covers), lost hours of work, chemo medications, a wig, and home-schooling expenses, etc.

We know Sierra has a long road ahead, but God is good, and we will all get her through this together. Thank you for your support and kindneas.
