We are raising funds to replace the Our Sister Parish mission's aging pickup truck with a slightly larger vehicle that will better allow us to transport delegations and supplies to and from the rural communities of Berlín. Your support will allow us to better serve both the residents of these communities and the Americans that visit them.
Our Sister Parish mission is a faith-based ecumenical effort designed to bring hope and social development to the poor of Berlín, Usulután, El Salvador, particularly those who live in the cantons of Berlín. Our goal is to raise awareness and embrace solidarity by developing committed relationships between churches in the United States and our brothers and sisters in El Salvador so that we may, with God's help, mutually liberate one another from social, material, and spiritual poverty. We are a mission outreach of the Presbytery of Des Moines (PCUSA) , but churches from various denominations, as well as non-religious organizations, participate in our work. The Presbytery of Des Moines office is located in Urbandale, Iowa and is the district office for the south central part of Iowa and the Presbyterian Church, USA churches that are in that area.
In El Salvador, the daily aspects of the mission are managed by the Pastoral Team of Berlín. The Pastoral Team , a group of Salvadorans who themselves have lived the experience of rural poverty, is responsible for coordinating and administering the various development projects in the municipality managed by the mission. They help the rural communities organize themselves, elect leaders, and then decide for themselves what their most pressing issues and needs are. The Pastoral Team then helps the community find a way to address those issues and needs. Along with the Pastoral Team , Mission co-worker Rev. Katherine Pater , an employee of the Presbytery of Des Moines , helps facilitate the work as a coordinator between the Salvadoran and American entities.They also help to build long-term partnerships of love and solidarity between church congregations or other organizations in the United States and individual communities in of Berlín.
Compañeros , Companions in Christ, is the coordinating body for the Presbytery of Des Moines ' El Salvador mission. Their responsibilities include educating people in the Presbytery of Des Moines and others about the work of the mission, assisting churches that wish to organize delegations, promoting specific projects that support the mission, and fundraising.
