About OLSHA
OLSHA is an independent, K-12 college-preparatory school loyal to the Magisterium. The school’s small class sizes foster the very best learning environment where no child is left out or allowed to fall through the cracks and every child is afforded the opportunity to live up to his/her potential. OLSHA offers a classical liberal arts curriculum, steeped in traditional Catholic values and Western heritage, and has a 100% college acceptance rate. Graduates have been accepted into first-rate colleges of their choice including Hillsdale College, University of Illinois College of Engineering, Texas A & M, Ave Maria University, U.S. Navy Nuclear College, College of St. Mary, Marquette, UNH, Regis, and NIU.

This nationally recognized, award-winning school is located in an impoverished area of Rockford, Illinois and has never turned a child away because of inability to pay.

While the national unemployment rate is around 5.5%, Rockford residents are struggling with a whopping unemployment rate of 13%. Rockford is in the top 4% of most dangerous cities in the US, and public high school graduation rate hovers around 50%. Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Academy is a haven where students are offered not only a safe and nurturing environment, but the very best education, preparing them as citizens and future leaders of this great nation.

Richard Brookhiser dedicates his biography of Lincoln, Founder's Son, to Mrs. Altham and students:

Philosophy
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Academy is committed to the philosophy of educating the whole person through the formation of the will, the intellect and the character in the light of the Catholic faith. Each student is seen as a precious gift from God whose eternal goal is Heaven. We direct all of our actions to the greater glory of God, and to training our students to recognize and follow his will in a challenging academic environment rooted in the classical liberal arts tradition. This education exposes students to the good, the true and the beautiful, and is designed to form individuals free from the political agendas and opinions of others, free to make correct judgments and decisions based on objective truth and a properly formed conscience.

Mission Statement
To Jesus through Mary, we aim to form saints and leaders rooted in the immutable truths of the Catholic faith, appreciative of their Western heritage and religious traditions, in particular the extraordinary form of the Mass and the ancient sacred music of the Church, and inspired to bear witness to others of the Hope that is within them.  We challenge each student to pursue perfection in holiness and excellence in academics as we strive to rebuild the culture through truth, faith and service.

Goal
We strive to produce the “true Christian… the supernatural man who thinks and acts constantly and consistently in accordance with right reason illumined by the supernatural light of the example and teaching of Christ” (Pope Pius XI, Christian Education of Youth). The goal of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Academy is to lead students to a knowledge and love of God. We direct all our actions toward the honor and glory of God through the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.

Awards
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Academy was named by the Acton Institute one of the Top Fifty Catholic High Schools in the nation.  This award is designed to honor excellence in Catholic schools. The Acton Institute is a think tank that promotes the integration of Judeo-Christian truths with free market principles.  www.chshonor.org   www.acton.org

In 2009, Elizabeth Altham, one of our junior- and senior-high teachers, received the Salvatori Award for Excellence in Teaching.  This award is presented by Hillsdale College each year to recognize teachers and schools that provide a superior liberal arts education.  The Academy received national recognition and $25,000 as a part of the award.  www.hillsdale.edu

Faculty
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Academy is unique in that we require all full-time faculty to be devoted Catholics who adhere to the unchanging doctrines and moral teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. Each member of the staff signs an oath of fidelity to the Magisterium and a profession of faith to the Catholic Church. Our teachers exhibit great virtue in a spirit of humility that provides a rich example to our students and to each other. Our qualified, experienced faculty hold degrees from institutions such as Yale College, University of Wisconsin, Franciscan University of Steubenville, Rockford College and University of Dallas.

My Family
I’d like to introduce myself. My name is Lee Van Scoy. I have two amazing teenage boys named Christopher and Nicholas; they are smart, funny, creative and avid readers. They love learning about history; they both excel in languages, math and critical thinking. My primary goal in raising them has always been their education, and my biggest fear has been that they would get bored, not be challenged, and lose interest in education. That is not a problem for students at OLSHA! One of the most rewarding things as a mom is to see that, even at ages 14 and 16, they have not lost that wonderful spark of excitement over learning new things. Around the dinner table, I hear the most fascinating things about the Founding Fathers, the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. They conjugate Latin verbs and discuss Shakespeare, Chaucer and Thomas Paine. Every time I hear “Hey mom, guess what?” I know that I am about to hear an interesting fact or mesmerizing story.

As a single mom struggling to keep my head above water, I began this campaign for the sole purpose of humbling myself and begging for help with tuition. I’m a freelancer, and work has been slow lately, so my tuition is late. My number one priority is to keep my children in the school that they love.

My two boys:

What I have recently discovered is that MANY other families at the school are in the same boat financially, struggling to give their children a high quality education while barely keeping their heads above water. And many other families are behind on tuition. There are quite a few students whose parents are not native English speakers and are struggling to find work. Small, private schools cannot survive if the families cannot pay tuition!

Please help my boys and the other needy students of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Academy pay their tuition, so the school can continue to offer the finest education and complete some much needed upgrades that will allow us to reach many more students! All funds will be matched 100% and 100% of proceeds will go directly towards the tuition payments of needy families. Thank you for your support!
