Mr. Eugene Dennard is a longtime native of Cordele GA who followed the American dream and opened his own business called, "Dennard's Exchange Mart in Cordele" some 20 plus years ago. Mr. Dennard, 70 years old and also a double amputee, would often hire young men from his own community to work in his establishment. His family never imagined that his generosity and compassionate heart would lead to a devastating event on Friday October 10th, 2014.
On that Friday, Mr. Dennard gave Willie Telfair, one of his own employees, a ride home. That's when Crisp County Law enforcers say Telfair brutally attacked Dennard and robbed him. Mr. Dennard, who suffered a severe blow to his head, was then left for dead at the end of a sparsely traveled road. Two hunters from Florida discovered Dennard on the dirt road near the airport, and they found him just in time.
Such a brutal crime sparked the creation of the community organization, "My Brother's Keeper, My Sister's Keeper Cordele". This is a grassroots organization which seeks to bring wholesale change and uplift to the Westside of Cordele and Crisp County in general. The group is comprised of men and women from Cordele, past and present, who live locally and across the country.
As a result his attack, Mr. Dennard suffered severe brain and lung damage in the October incident. He's still undergoing treatment at a rehab center in Plains,GA.
"He has no use of his body. He can't turn over he can't sit up. He can't even lift his head. The only thing he does is he talks and he can use his left arm,” says his wife, Ms. Dora Dennard.
Ms. Dora Dennard said their medical bills are in the thousands of dollars.
