A former colonel in the U.S. Army, John Norwood has announced his candidacy for the Farmers Branch City Council, District 3. John has led military operations all over the world and worked as an industry executive for major defense companies.

After living in Washington D.C. for 12 years, John and his family moved to Farmers Branch in August 2013. They quickly became involved in the community, making connections at church, with neighbors, and among city leaders.

“Right away, we could see that Farmers Branch has a lot going for it – a great location, beautiful parks, a strong sense of community and revitalization in key areas, ” says John, a second-generation career military officer with roots in Texas.

“I want to keep the momentum going, while also working to build consensus within the community.  Our location, facilities, services and diversity are key strengths. Farmers Branch can be a destination within Dallas as we accentuate the things that make our community a great place to live, work and play. ”

As a military engineer, John has substantial experience in new family housing, construction and development. As an industry executive, he’s written strategic plans and managed budgets for defense companies with annual sales exceeding $3 billion. John wants to bring his experience and fresh perspective to Farmers Branch and focus on attracting businesses and new families, filling empty retail spaces, enhancing infrastructure and protecting the environment.  John believes that in order to keep our city vibrant, our citizens need to be involved and have their voices heard.

Currently, John works as a consultant, advising companies pursuing business with the Department of Defense. He’s also an adjunct professor at the University of Texas at Dallas, where he teaches advanced calculus.

John has a Ph.D. and a Master’s degree from Rice University and a Bachelor of Science in mathematics from West Point, where he was commissioned in the Corps of Engineers. He and his wife of 31 years, Leslie , have three adult children, Kat, Matt and Amanda Norwood, as well as a daughter-in-law, Abby.
