Gospel Preacher – Treasure in Heaven but None on Earth
Tim Smith is a gospel preacher (and accomplished poet) who has labored for years with small independent churches. He has sought to bring them the good news of the Gospel, God’s power to save, so that those who are obedient to its message may be able to lay up treasure in heaven. He has had successes and disappointments in his preaching the Gospel, but he has considered it a blessing to be able to make the effort.
Tim Smith and his good wife Freda are in dire circumstances, all as a result of an automobile accident in 2004 in which Tim suffered catastrophic injuries. The other party involved in the accident was clearly at fault, a fact that was not in dispute. As is often the case with insurance companies, the concern is not the merit of the claim, but the ultimate cost of settlement. The longer the insurance company can delay settlement, the lower the ultimate cost of settlement to them. As the claim plodded its way through the courts, pressing medical costs, legal fees, and living expenses depleted what little personal funds the Smiths had. Consequently, they had to settle the case for pennies on the dollar. The insurance company strategy worked
Tim has not and will not recover from his catastrophic injuries. He suffers severe and unremitting pain and requires continuous medical intervention. Since Tim has not been able to work at all for quite a long time, available resources have been severely limited. Freda has had to take off many times from her job at a local school district in order to tend to Tim’s medical emergencies and treatments. This has further restricted their income. Now, because of the excessive time off necessary to tend to Tim’s many medical needs, the school district has forced Freda into early retirement. The Smiths have had to take out predatory loans to meet medical costs and living expenses. Shortfalls in income necessary to meet medical and living expenses amount to about $1,500 per month. It is estimated that to retire the predatory loans and past due bills, plus cover about one year of income shortfall will require a fund of about $40,000.
As a direct result of the injuries from the accident, Tim now has cirrhosis (non-alcoholic) of the liver (liver function is down to about 10 percent of normal) and pancreatitis. Both are progressive and non-curable. He has been placed on hospice. We ask that you introspectively consider their plight. If you are able to contribute some amount, however small it may be, keep in mind that even a small amount has the potential of a greater satisfaction of needs for them than for you. We know that to alleviate their needs means that you must choose between alternative uses of your funds. The loss to you will be more than compensated by the gain to them.
