An Impassioned Plea
It takes a village to raise a child…that’s what they say, isn’t it? We don’t want the whole village to have access to our innocent and vulnerable little ones, though, do we? We only want those kind and selfless souls who will, ever so gently and without being asked, give of their time and their wisdom and their love. We want our children surrounded by those who will truly give the best of themselves. We know such a person, you and I. Search your mind and the recesses of your heart and a name comes dancing to the surface, surrounded in all the laughter and light that the owner of that name embodies. That name is Meela.
On a Summer day, when the air is hot and the time drags by, I can find my little girls up at Meela’s house, eating popsicles and floating in the kiddie pool. The words “Where are the girls,” shouted into the ether, have so often been answered by “Oh, they’re up hangin’ at Meela’s.” Those words have always filled me with a reassurance that my greatest blessings are in the most gentle and caring of hands. Nevermind that there are no children that live at Meela and Ben's house. The house is a childhood wonderland, carefully crafted by this amazing woman, who wants nothing more than to give this wonderland to a child of her own.
So if it takes a village to raise a child, isn’t the reverse also true? Doesn’t it also sometimes take a village to give a child? I’ve heard it said that a child is the closest thing a mother will ever come to magic. Join me in making the magic happen for Meela and Ben. Join me in thanking her, in this small way, for being your village.
