Hi my name is Douglas and this is my 3-year-old grandson
Nico who lives in the Alexandria, VA. Nico
was born with spina bifida. As a result he
experiences bowel and bladder challenges, diminished temperature and pain
sensation from belly button down and has some muscle and strength deficit in
his legs.
Nico is being raised with 2 sisters a brother and a cousin that thinks he is a brother. Everyday he attempts to keep up with his siblings. He is a very smart, extremely actively, happy boy despite his physical challenges. Nico is also in the Head-start program and doing very well.
Nico has several items to help with mobility like AFO Ankle Foot Orthotic, a RGO Reciprocal Gait Orthosis, a wheel chair and a walker. However these apparatuses only assist mechanically.
We have recently found a company called "Heartsong Spay Neuter Clinic" located in Martinez, GA they rescue animals from dog pounds and re-train them as service animals. The cost is nominal, basically less than an eighth of the cost for the same animal trained in the normal market.
They have found the perfect dog for my grandson named "Duke". Duke is a natural and is swiftly going through the 1500-step training program. This is a video of Duke going through a part of his training with Loretta from Heartsong. Duke will greatly help Nico's mobility. Duke is being trained as a mobility and wheelchair dog.
The money is needed for the dog, a specially designed harness, and several round trips between Virginia and Georgia for continued training. Thank you in advance for your time and your monetary gift:
