Nicholas's Medical Mission Trip

Welcome

Every year since its founding in 1997, students from the University of Pikeville’s Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine have been given the opportunity to serve impoverished, migrant workers throughout the bateys of the Dominican Republic. These students provide hands-on care and needed medications, as they serve alongside additional members of the University of Pikeville community who provide other social services.

Who Am I?

My name is Nicholas Steckler. I am a first year at Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine (KYCOM), interested in emergency medicine. Becoming a doctor has been a lifelong dream, and I am grateful that I will have the opportunity to serve others using the skills that I have been learning. When I learned that I had the opportunity to provide a much needed service to the people of the Dominican Republic, I was eager to learn more about the project. I knew that such an opportunity would not only allow me to put my growing set of skills to the ultimate test, but allow me to make a difference in the lives of others at the same time.

Why Donate?

The people of the Dominican Republic’s bateys need help. The bateys are impoverished towns which house the migrant sugar workers. These workers and their families come from the Dominican Republic and Haiti. They lack access to basic healthcare and education.

While other members of the University of Pikeville community provide religious and community services, the medical students provide an array of medical care including osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT). OMT is a unique form of hands-on medical care involving the diagnosis and treatment of many ailments. It can be used to either supplement or replace drugs and surgery, making it the perfect low cost treatment for the numerous physical maladies that can be found in the bateys. The volunteers also provide prescription and over-the-counter medications.

This opportunity also provides me with the chance to practice and sharpen my skills in diagnosis and treatment. I want to become the best doctor that I can be, and strive to look for opportunities that encourage growth. This is one of those opportunities.

I am eager to serve, and feel that this is a good opportunity for me, however, as a medical student with a family, finances are tight. Your donation will give me the opportunity to serve, and give back to the people of the Dominican Republic.

Thank You!

I sincerely thank you for visiting my page and reading about my project.
