Firefighter Joel Johnston's battle

An Indianapolis Firefighter, Joel Johnston, was recently diagnosed with cancer. Just this week, Joel received news that he has aggressive Stage 4 cancer that has spread to his liver, stomach, lungs, hips and lymph nodes.
Joel is 44 years old and is a 16 year veteran of the Indianapolis Fire Department and currently works on Ladder 29-A. He is married to Loran and together they have four children ranging from high school to elementary age. Joel is an avid athlete who spends a lot of his free time exercising, training and competing in bike races, triathlons, and Iron Man competitions. Joel is not a smoker and part of his training consists of a regimented diet to keep his body in top condition.
Joel will begin chemotherapy next week and has the battle for his life ahead of him.
As a firefighter, Joel is expected to put the safety and well-being of others ahead of his own. It is normal for any patient to immediately be concerned about the mounting expenses and long term financial impact for his family when such a serious and life threatening illness strikes. After a brief conversation on Friday, Joel has expressed the cost and financial fears to be his initial concerns. In reality, this is one time when we want Joel’s concern to be on himself, his care, his family and his recovery.
We are asking for help for Joel and his family to get hrough this time of crisis. Please consider a financial donation to help Joel with the expense of this disease so that he can concentrate on his care and recovery and get back to life that he knows and loves with the Indianapolis Fire Department.
