The Healthy Meals Program
Nexos Comunitarios (NC) is a Peruvian NGO that works to promote #ResponsibleHumanDevelopment alongside rural and urban communities that live in poverty and social exclusion. NC began its work in the most poverty stricken district of Peru in 2013, with an aim of contributing with the creation of development processes that are real and sustainable. This is the District of Lares, where 97.8% of the population lives in total poverty, and 89.2% in extreme poverty, according to statistics provided by Peru’s National Institute of Data and Statistics and the UNPD.
In the communities of Lares, chronic malnutrition is a problem linked to their political and geographic isolation, leaving these Andean microcosms largely out of reach from public policies that can allow them to achieve a real development.
For this reason, NC has designed the Healthy Meals Program (HMP). The HMP is based on the Fruits and Vegetable Prescription Program, lead successfully by Wholesome Wave.
The HMP aims to improve the nutrition of pregnant mothers and children between 0-2 years of age in Choquecancha. Choquecancha is the largest community in Lares, with 1,400 people living roughly 4,000 meters above sea level.
We have recently begun our work in Choquecancha, focusing on building strong relationships with community actors such as the Health Center, farmers and local authorities. At NC we believe that relations based on compassion and intercultural exchanges are the foundation for lasting sustainable results.
At the moment, we have obtained the necessary funding for the agricultural component of the project, which is the first vital step. Dreams to Beams (a Canadian Charity) is the organization that is supporting this first effort. Thanks Dreams to Beams!
To promote #GenderEmpowerment and #FoodSecurity within the community, NC will include women in the construction and maintenance of several greenhouses (2 to start with the project). This is the first step to provide foods that are normally inaccessible to the population of Choquecancha. These products will supplement the beneficiaries’ nutritional deficiencies and fight #Malnutrition in a vulnerable population, where, mainly, children suffer from the irreversible consequences for the physical and mental development.
However, we need your help to continue with the next step. We need your help to raise $1000!
These funds will go towards:
- Conducting health tests;
- Surveys among the women to gain more in depth knowledge regarding their nutritional status in order to properly develop our program.
- Work with a nutritionist to know the health status of each participant and determine the food they need.
With the information collected at the Health Center, we know that, approximately (the information is not exact) 50% of the children are living with anaemia and parasites.
As soon as we have the funds, we will be conducting haemoglobin and parasite tests among the participants to gain up-to-date and accurate readings of the situation in Choquecancha.
These tests will cost $385 and the results will allow us to work with a nutritionist, who has the needed knowledge about the region and its culture, to determine the exact products needed to combat the nutritional inadequacies that each participant has.
Furthermore, we will be applying the Multidimensional Poverty Index . This will allow us to measure the deprivation of Choquecancha through more that just monetary indicators, including years of schooling, sanitation, assets ownership, etc. In order to carry out the health tests and the survey, NC needs to be present in Choquecancha, working with the community and learning alongside them.
From our office in Urubamba, every journey we make to Choquecancha, in public transportation, costs, approximately, $35 for two NC members. The exact amount depends on the type of public transportation available.
This US$500 will allow us to run ALL the required tests and make all the journeys necessary to Choquecancha, to accomplish our current goals.
- US$ 10 will covered the cost of haemoglobin and parasite tests of one participant of the program.
- US$ 35 will covered the cost of one visit to the community.
- US$ 45 will covered the cost of haemoglobin and parasite tests of one participant of the program AND one visit to the community.

Nexos Comunitarios (NC) es una organización peruana sin fines de lucro que trabaja para promover el #DesarrolloHumanoResponsable en las comunidades rurales y urbanas que viven en situación de pobreza y exclusión social.
NC comenzó su trabajo en el distrito más pobre del Perú , en el 2013, con el propósito de contribuir en que los procesos de desarrollo sean reales y sostenibles. Este es el distrito de Lares, en donde el 97.8% de la población vive en situación de pobreza y el 89.2% en situación de pobreza extrema, de acuerdo a las estadísticas proveídas por el Instituto Nacional de Estadística e Informática y el PNUD.
En las comunidades de Lares, la desnutrición crónica es un problema ligado al aislamiento político y geográfico en el que se encuentran, dejando estos #MicrocosmosAndinos fuera del alcance de políticas públicas que les permitan un verdadero desarrollo.
Por esta razón, NC ha diseñado el Programa de Comidas Saludables (PCS). El PCS se basa en el Programa de Prescripción de Frutas y Verduras, liderado exitosamente por Wholesome Wave .
El PCS busca mejorar la nutrición de las mujeres embarazadas y niños y niñas entre 0-2 años de edad en Choquecancha. Choquecancha es la comunidad más grande en Lares, con 1400 personas viviendo y ubicada, aproximadamente, a 4,000 m.s.n.m.
Recientemente, hemos empezado nuestro trabajo en Choquecancha, enfocándonos en crear relaciones fuertes con diferentes actores de la comunidad, como el Centro de Salud, agricultores y autoridades locales. En NC, creemos que las relaciones basadas en la compasión e intercambios interculturales son la base de resultados sostenibles.
En este momento, gracias a Dreams to Beams (organización sin fines de lucro canadiense), hemos obtenido el financiamiento necesario para iniciar con el componente agrícola del proyecto, el cual es crucial para empezar.
Para promover #EmpoderamientoDeMujeres y #SeguridadAlimentaria en la comunidad, NC incluirá a mujeres en la construcción y mantenimiento de los biohuertos (2 para empezar). Este es el primer paso para proveer alimentos que normalmente son inaccesibles a los pobladores de Choquecancha. Estos productos serán el suplemento para que los beneficiarios puedan combatir las deficiencias nutricionales y luchar contra la #Desnutrición de una población vulnerable, en donde los niños y niñas sufren, principalmente, consecuencias irreversibles para su desarrollo físico y mental.
Sin embargo, necesitamos tu ayuda para continuar con el siguiente paso. ¡Necesitamos recaudar US$ 1000!
El financiamiento será utilizado para:
- Realizar exámenes médicos ;
- Encuestas entre las mujeres para adquirir un conocimiento más profundo sobre su estado nutricional y poder así, desarrollar propiamente nuestro programa.
- Trabajar con un nutricionista para saber el estatus de salud de cada participante y determinar qué comida necesita cada uno.
Con los datos entregados por el Centro de Salud, sabemos que, aproximadamente (el dato no es exacto), el 50% de niñas y niños sufren de anemia y parásitos.
Tan pronto tengamos el financiamiento, realizaremos los análisis de hemoglobina y parásitos entre los participantes del programa para obtener la información más exacta de la situación en Choquecancha.
Los análisis costarán US$385 y sus resultados nos permitirán tener la información necesaria para trabajar con un nutricionista, conocedor de la región y su cultura, para determinar los productos exactos que cada participante necesita para combatir los problemas nutricionales existentes.
Adicionalmente, aplicaremos el Índice de Pobreza Multidimensional . Esto nos permitirá medir las privaciones que sufre la población de Choquecancha, incluyendo no sólo la situación monetaria, sino los años de educación que reciben, por ejemplo.
Para poder llevar a cabo los exámenes y las encuestas, NC necesita estar presente en Choquecancha, trabajando con la comunidad y aprendiendo junto a ellos y ellas. Cada visita que hacemos a Choquecancha, desde nuestra oficina en Urubamba, nos toma 6 horas de viaje (ida-y-vuelta) en transporte público y nos cuesta (a dos miembros de NC), aproximadamente, US$ 35 (dependiendo del tipo de transporte público disponible).
Los US$500 nos permitirán realizar TODOS los análisis y realizar las respectivas visitas.
