YMCA Cambodia Project

Donation protected
Hey everyone,

I'm starting this GoFundMe page to help fund the YMCA Cambodia project, (a day camp for 100 of the poorest kids in Cambodia)  which guarantees them at least one meal a day, and will help in donating school supplies and books. The group I'm involved with is doing some hefty fundraising to keep this program going in Cambodia. We will also be traveling to Cambodia in the month of August to volunteer there. This project is near and dear to my heart, and I'll explain why.

If you know me, you know that I don't ever ask for much. I'm always out lending a helping hand to others, and giving as much of myself as possible. This is an opportunity for me to give my own energy and effort to help, even though I don't really have the funds to do it on my own. That's why I need your help.

My family escaped the Khmer Rouge genocide in the 1970's, where an estimated 1.5 million Cambodians were killed, mutilated, or starved to death. All four of my uncles were killed or starved to death.  I lost 3 out of 4 grandparents. The remaining family members I have, are the people who taught me compassion,  strength, and gratitude.

I visited my home country for the first time in 2005. I didn't know it then, but it changed my life. For the first time, I saw poverty as I'd never seen it before. Children, hungry, naked from head to toe. Beggars with missing limbs from landmines, hobbling about in the dirt on the street. I went to Cambodia with two suitcases and left with both nearly empty, having donated it. I gave away all the cash I brought with me.  And I left, filled with a lifetime of experience. I had no idea that this would continue to impact me on a daily basis, for the rest of my life. We take for granted simple things, like food, and clean water. A warm bed, a home. Free education.

I would like to ask you to donate any sum that you feel comfortable with. Whether it's $25, or $5, if you can forgo that venti latte for a couple days, or that $7 "value meal," please know that every penny and every dollar counts. And if you can't donate, I understand -- please share this link, please tell your friends, please spread the word!!

I appreciate you in advance. Thank you in advance. Much love to you.

-- Melissa
