VERMONT HUMANE FEDERATION ASSISTS WITH HORSE RESCUE IN NORTHFIELD

******************************************************************************
On December 18, 2015 at approximately 10:30 AM, Northfield Police served a search warrant at a residence in Northfield, VT, in support of an ongoing animal cruelty investigation. Member agencies of the Vermont Humane Federation (VHF) assisted in the investigation and ultimate seizure of 8 horses.
The team, which included 2 veterinarians and representatives from several local humane societies and rescue groups, assessed the health and conditions of over 40 animals, including 20 dogs, 6 cats, 10 ducks, and 13 horses.
Eight of the horses were found to be seriously underweight and in need of supportive care, and were safely removed from the property to undisclosed locations.
The VHF is providing ongoing care for the seized animals thanks to its member agencies, and donations are urgently needed to help bring these animals back to health. The VHF receives no public funds to support this life-saving work.
This case comes on the heels of the near final report of the legislatively appointed Vermont Animal Cruelty Task Force, which the VHF chairs and has been meeting since August to draft recommendations to the Senate and House Judiciary Committees concerning animal cruelty response protocols, training and data gathering. The serious lack of resources to house and care for the animal victims of cruelty and neglect were among the many topics discussed by the diverse group.
