Donation protected
The Apalachin Library and the Family of Irene J Cruty announce the establishment of The Irene J Cruty Memorial at The Apalachin Library.

Irene J Cruty was a resident of Apalachin NY since 1973.  She was an avid reader, member, patron and volunteer of The Apalachin Library.  It was her desire to see The Library continue to flourish and in such, arrangements were made with her family and estate to create and sustain a long-term Memorial with those goals.  Mrs. Cruty passed away on August 20, 2014.

The mission of The Irene J Cruty Memorial is to sustainably promote the enjoyment of and access to reading resources, educational opportunities and higher quality of life for patrons of The Apalachin Library.  These goals shall be achieved through the following programs.

PROGRAMS

1.     Memorial Reading Garden

2.     Large Print Reading Resources

3.     “Back to School” Backpack Program

4.     Administrational Funds to Support Library Needs/Fundraising

MEMORIAL READING GARDEN

Through raised funds, sponsorship and in-kind contribution, The Apalachin Library will establish a tranquil reading garden on its grounds.  Library patrons will have the opportunity to relax and enjoy the garden with their favorite book or enjoy the company of their friends.

LARGE-PRINT READING MATERIALS

Funds raised by the Memorial will be used to procure additional large-print books and reading material for visually challenged patrons of the Library.

“BACK TO SCHOOL” BACKPACK PROGRAM

The “Back to School” Backpack Program will support children residing in areas served by The Apalachin Library.  Students will be provided basic school supplies including backpacks, pens, pencils, crayons, notebooks, paper, craft items and other materials as received.  The Backpack Program will be available to students from kindergarten through eighth grade.    Students must be registered with a school district in the territory of The Apalachin Library.   Library membership is required.

ADMINISTRATIONAL SUPPORT

To support The Apalachin Library, The Memorial will provide funds to assist in its day-to-day operations as well as continue fundraising for the programs mentioned.

Funds go directly to The Apalachin Library in support of its programming.

About The Apalachin Library
The Apalachin Library was started in 1957 on the McGalde family’s front porch.  From 1960 to 1982, the library moved to various locations including a schoolhouse, the Apalachin Methodist church and the Grange Hall on E. Main St.  In 1967, a board called the Friends of the Apalachin Library was formed and its reading center became affiliated with the Finger Lakes Library System in 1968.  The library relocated to its current location in 1992.  The Reading Center obtained a provisional charter from New York State and became the Apalachin Library Association in May 2008.  It is registered as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
