Moving Bodies Butoh and Live Art

This is Ambra Gatto Bergamasco, director and curator of Moving Bodies Festival - Butoh and Live art. This festival has two parts, one in Dublin, Ireland and one in Torino, Italy. I am researching, practicing and dancing Butoh since 1998.

I come from a contemporary and experimental research theatre family. They run Espace Theatre in Torino. They lived but of their art and heading towards 45 years of artistic carrier. It is their life. I trained, learned and worked with them since very young, then started my collaborations as dancer through collaborative choreography with e.g. Mallika Sarabhai in India and Italy; developed my own solos; went back to academia and currently endlessly finishing a PhD in Urban & Art Practices Geography in Maynooth, Ireland. I have worked in the fields of Mental Illness and Disabibliites through theatre and movement practices influenced by Butoh.

Since developing a deep love for Butoh dance, all my interests and passions are largely influenced by it. As Yumiko Yoshioka said in our interview: "Butoh is a philosophy".  This is what makes me want to pursue the direction of this festival, the desire to have everyone experiencing Butoh once in their life.

Festival  background: This festival originated thanks to Katin Neue in 2012 under "Butoh Festival Dublin". I was co-directing and performing and facilitating classes. In 2014 I took over and called it Moving Bodies Butoh Festival. It toured 7 artists -  in 5 cities and three countries for 33 days. A really great experience, both artistically and on a human level. Yes, all of this happen. And yes, all of this happened through a funding campaign and no other funding. People loved it, the audience came, they attended workshops, and went well.

Asking for your contribution: why?
Your contribution is vital as it does not only make sure this festival can happen. It provides the necessary space for artists and audience to develop networks and collaborations; it generates the climate that every artist needs to develop further goals and achievements. For example,  the experience of being part of Moving Bodies Butoh Festival 2014  made the following things come to life: Yuri Dini had his first Butoh Festival in Bologna inDecember 2014 in his Yurt;  Paul Michael Henry is now directing his Festival in Glasgow; I met Michela Orlandi together we are working on a documentary on Francis Bacon (it got short listed from Film Bord last year) and I added to the development of the appreciation of the Butoh scene in Ireland, the Butoh Film Festival co-curated with artist Fergus Byrne in Dublin to which Masaki Iwana came to premiere "Vermilion Souls". It was a success. We gained nominal support from the Embassy of Japan in Ireland.

Beyond the Festival: By contributing to Moving Bodies Festival - Butoh and Live Art, you are literally giving the possibility to create new jobs in the field of performance to come about, you are, together with me, pioneering new forms of collaboration and a resilience to continue believing that art and culture are fundamental for a healthy and interesting life, no matter what happens on the journey. You are effectively ensuring that new forms of art, based on collaboration, can exist and that Butoh together with Live Art can be visible and developed in Ireland.
What Moving Bodies Festival Needs & What You Get
In order to cover basic expenses to run this festival I need to raise 800 euro. This is keeping it real and simple. No glossy programmes, no extra waist. Nice and Simple. This amount will cover part of the venue  costs and the PR needed in order to gain visibility in Ireland.
Of course, your contribution will be well rewarded. Your name will go on the website and stay there; according to how much you can afford and think it is reasonable to donate, you will be pampered with original and creative perks.  Original photos,  an online creative process to maximise "stagnation" with me....Go Look and Pick your Fancy!
You can help in anyway, financially or simply make sure that all your friends and network know this is happening in Dublin from the 27th to the 30th of May 2015. Workshops from the 24th to the 1st of June 2015.
The venue of the festival is Mart Gallery - Rathmines, D6

I truly hope to see you here there everywhere!
Thank you so much for engaging, sharing and supporting.
